Back from a holiday break and some updates!

Back from Chiang Mai

In the year 2017, I didn’t really have a holiday break due to the circumstances and things that took place during the entire year. The year 2017 had been very tiring and exhausting, both mental, emotional and physical aspects of them. When the opportunity to travel at the start of year 2018, I decided to go for it, I badly needed a holiday break away from Singapore for a while.

I went Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 29th January 2018 to 3rd February 2018, with Tiffany, Peps and Valentino, part of the team #epiphanygochiangmai, a partial FAM trip with accommodation sponsorship and a travel agency in Chiang Mai hosting us with their day trip programs. My role was the travel photographer as well as the travel reportage/behind the scenes photographer. Returning back home with about 2.4k++ photographs shot with the Canon EOS 6D Mark II, this figure is a good headache to have although I do have to curate and select the photos for editing and publishing! Visit my Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/tangenghui/ and you can have a peek into some of the photos that I took during my Chiang Mai travel photography adventure!

Adding on to my travel photography, it would be my Chiang Mai travel writing articles. Tentatively at this point in time, I have 5 articles/topics planned to be published along with my photographs in 1 month’s time (hopefully it can be earlier!).

Travel photography, travel reportage and travel writing, an area that I really love to do! Developing my own travel photography and travel writing style! Working harder in this area and hope to have more of such opportunities in the near future!

Updates

Before I left for my Chiang Mai travel photography adventure, I had some backlogs, ongoing IT issues with my photography and travel website/blog, personal errands.

Upon returning back home to Singapore, I have to continue clearing up my errands and to do list! In this coming week, this is going to be busy for me leading up to Chinese Lunar New Year 2018.

I have the following list (non exhaustive and in random order) below:

  • 2 x portraiture photo shoots
  • Covering Chingay 2018 media preview
  • Continuing to troubleshoot my ongoing IT issues with (a.k.a repair) my photography and travel website/blog
  • Arranging appointments to meet ex-colleagues, pr agencies folks
  • Continue with spring cleaning
  • Personal errands and administrative matters
  • Start writing my review articles for Canon EOS M6, Canon EOS 6D Mark II, Jaybird Freedom 2 and Jaybird RUN.

Looking ahead

I posted updates on my social media platforms that my start to the year 2018 is kind of mix, slow and steady with some minor hiccups. This is the time to build on this upcoming wave and I hope thing would grow and improve the coming months ahead. Step by step, brick by brick, definitely not the fastest and biggest pace of growth, slow and steady growth, taking into consideration the volatile and difficult economic environment and market conditions.

Although I have set some goals to achieve by end of the 1st quarter 2018, one of them was publishing my own zine, I hope that I am able to meet my goal and target, considering the above matters that I need to handle.

January 2018 is over and now it is February 2018, a relatively short month, very soon, it will be March 2018 and the end of 1st quarter 2018. Time to continue working hard and striving for my goals and objectives in the year 2018.

Celebrating 10 years right here

In January 2018, I celebrated another milestone that didn’t cross my mind, this personal website/blog is 10 years old, having being founded and started in January 2008. This 10 years milestone completely slipped my mind until fellow photographer Joseph Goh congratulated me on LinkedIN, I login and checked and I read “Celebrating 10 years at www.tangenghui.com”.

It was like déjà vu, a bit like Star Wars: The Force Awakens (almost)! This dawned upon me that I had been writing over a period of 10 years, it was just like the blink of an eye, when I first started writing on my personal website/blog in January 2008. Looking back and reflecting on my past 10 years here, while I am celebrating my personal milestone, my personal website/blog is the less well-known websites/blogs that I currently manage. On the other hand, a lot of my most in-depth personal thoughts, views, feelings and emotions were penned down and published here.

This personal website/blog of mine is not a glamourous nor colourful or flamboyant website. It’s all about personal growth, personal development, entrepreneurship, business, finance, social media, information technology news, products and devices announcements/updates, social causes, sports science and training.

What’s next for the year ahead in 2018? I always set a personal goal to improve on my level and quality of content/topics published here inside my personal website/blog. I am going to make some changes (some subtle, some might be distinct) reflecting the growth and maturity in my writing over the past 10 years.

Celebrating 10 years right here, striving forward and marking my timeline ahead in the near future for my next milestone.

To all my readers and supporters over the past 10 years, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart, for faithfully reading and supporting a “boring” personal blog/website.

Seeking my own Ikigai

At the start of the year 2018, I shared and wrote on the changes that I wanted to make for this new year 2018 and setting my goals for year 2018, after reflecting on my year 2017. On the 10th January, the day it was marked as “Another year older (Again) in 2018”, I promised myself that I wanted to get a book on that particular day, a personal goal for myself. I wanted to buy a particular book on that day since it’s a milestone day for me. I went to Kinokuniya Bugis and it was out of stock, I was determined to buy it today and I went Kinokuniya Orchard and I managed to buy it!

A new book – The little book of Ikigai : The essential Japanese way to finding your purpose in life by Ken Mogi. This is going to be a significant moment, one of my goals for year 2018, finding my purpose, finding my direction, seeking a balance in the force.

On that day, 10th January, I started my personal journey of exploration, seeking my own Ikigai (????). Googling for the diagram representing Ikigai, I found a common diagram of four circles, intersecting together. Although it was useful, easy to use and explain, I was looking for something more therapeutic and closer to my heart. In the midst of my Google search, I discovered some gorgeous landscape photographs with the word “Ikigai”.

At that moment, I knew how I wanted to share on my journeys seeking my own Ikigai, through the landscape photographs (most likely using the monochrome landscape photographs) that I took in Hokkaido, Japan.

Flipping the little book of Ikigai, there was a note to the Reader (that’s me!)

The Five Pillars of Ikigai

Pillar 1: Starting small

Pillar 2: Releasing yourself

Pillar 3: Harmony and sustainabiliyy

Pillar 4: The joy of little things

Pillar 5: Being in the here and now

My personal journey of Ikigai exploration and discovery has started; I am finding my own Ikigai.

Another Year Older (Again) in 2018

Entering into the 10th day of the month of January, it’s the time again for me, to add another digit to an existing number, another year older (again) in the year 2018.

As I aged, matured and mellowed over the decades, birthday is a quiet affair, sometimes alone, sometimes with friends, no fanciful meals, no glamourous photos shared on social media platforms, group photos of birthday gatherings were like a thing of the past since 5 to 10 years back? I don’t even know to be honest, sometimes, the pace of life and changes were so fast and furious that we lost track of our time.

Today, as I grow a year older (again) in 2018, I had a great lunch treat by my primary school friend Wendy, over a hot bowl of Hakata Ikkousha Tonkotsu Ramen, thereafter, we had kopi-o at Ya-Kun. Chatting with old friends is priceless as we aged into the middle stages of our life.

Since my birthdays are usually quiet and low key, I don’t usually get birthday gifts, however, today I received a gift it’s all about Singapore, Heritage, History and Culture. This special package is also a Christmas gift 2017, New Year 2018 gift, a 3-in-1 gift package!

No matter what type of gift it is, I really appreciate this gift from the social media folks, Faiz, Shaun and Nicholas. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart!

I set a goal that I wanted to get a book on my birthday today. I wanted to buy a particular book today since it’s a milestone day for me. I went to Kinokuniya Bugis and it was out of stock, I was determined to buy it today and I went Kinokuniya Orchard and I managed to buy it!

A new book – The little book of Ikigai : The essential Japanese way to finding your purpose in life. This is going to be a significant moment, one of my goals for year 2018, finding my purpose, finding my direction, seeking a balance in the force, on this day on my birthday in 2018, through this little book of Ikigai.

Adding another year (again) in 2018, I am thankful, grateful, humbled and blessed, for everything that I have in life at this juncture in time. It’s not perfect, it’s not that bad either.

Thank you to all my family, relatives and friends that stood by me, encouraged, supported me, lifted me up and pushed me from behind as I strive towards my goals.

To some of “you people”, you know who you are, I am leaving you behind and away from my life forever if I am able to.

Going to work even harder, smarter and more strategically in the year 2018! Onward!

7th January 2018 – 1st Update post for the Year

It’s been only a week since the new year 2018 kick off, while it wasn’t a big kick off style for me, more of slow and low key, I was happy with the work, flow and things that I wanted to do at the start of the year 2018. There is something that resonates with me, this phrase “some things never change” and one of the things was life is never perfect, never smooth and there is always ups and downs.

First few days of year 2018, my photography and travel website/blog was down for a few days (around 2-3 days) after my hosting and domain services company, Domains Priced Right updated and upgraded my hosting account. I thought everything was fine after that, the next thing was that my login was lost and I had to request for my friend’s Brian’s IT expertise to help me out.

Over an afternoon of troubleshooting, he managed to resolve the login for me and I am able to enter into my wp-admin backend panel. Initially, I thought it’s back to running normally, after further checking, I realised that my 11 years of hard work, my categories and tags were all gone, my photography and travel website/blog is now in a mess (the contents are still there though, feeling very thankful!). I need to return back and ask Brian for assistance again.

This “repair and recovery” phase is estimated going to take 1-2 weeks, after that, I am going to back up and transfer my domain and hosting services to my friend’s company Business Network Internet (BNI) Hub. During this time, I might find a new template for my photography and travel website/blog, time for a fresh start to year 2018, a fresh beginning with BNI Hub.

During the repair and recovery phase, I would spend time editing photographs, uploading them into my Flickr, 500px and Format photography portfolio. Meanwhile, I would work on my personal website/blog topics e.g. technology, gadgets, fin-tech, business, forex investing etc etc.

As for my photography business, personal photography and travel goals settings, I would put on hold until my photography and travel website/blog is “repaired and recovered” before publishing it.

Not the most ideal start to year 2018, it’s also not the worst start at all. Basically, I should be able to handle the hiccups being presented to me, I just have to find my ways and means, finding solutions, asking for assistance to get them back up and running properly again.

Other than my photography and travel website/blog update, I am continuing to spring clean my room and my possessions, decluttering, throwing away, giving away and keeping those things that I want. Following that, I am continuing to do spring cleaning in my home, helping, cleaning and decluttering as much as I could.

In the month of January 2018, I hope to clear some backlogs that I didn’t manage to clear in December 2017. Another area that I am keen to start writing and covering more on is on cryptocurrnecy, let’s hope this segment can help me grow something out of them.

Getting year 2018 on the correct note, staying firm, steady and stable on the ground while moving forward to grow and expand (it may and need not be the fastest) in this year 2018.

I want to make a breakthrough for this year 2018!

Setting my Goals for year 2018

I have been setting my goals for the past few years (probably 10 years or more if I recalled correctly), yet when I looked back and searched for my goal settings articles, it was like all over the place inside here, maybe under a different heading and different stages in my life and timeline.

Today, I would be writing and sharing on my personal goals settings for the year 2018, my goal settings for my photography business, personal photography and travel would not be published inside here, they should be published soon.

Over the past month, December 2017, I did quite a fair bit of personal reflection, preparing myself what I wanted to do and achieve for my goals in the year 2018. Some of my goals were more inner and personal goals than monetary or achievement goals.

  • Healthy and active sporting lifestyle (Disciplined exercise regime) – No excuses for myself, I had been lazy, slacking and ill-disciplined in this aspect. I need to get my lazy self up and exercising regularly and consistently again. With a healthy mindset, body, mind and soul, it would assist me in taking on all the challenges, stress and pressure of running a small photography business in an era of highly disruptive and competitive economy. Not to forget mentioning that being healthy and active is something that money can’t buy.
  • Read more books – Reading helps to soothe my mind, heart and soul, as well as adding knowledge, skills and understanding of things/matters in different industries, societies and people. I haven’t been reading more than I would love to. Moving forward in the year 2018, I want to read more books from a diverse nature and genres.
  • FOREX / Alternative Investments / Trading – These alternative investments areas were something that I embarked upon a few years back, however, I didn’t have the persistency and discipline to maintain and continue the journey due to a different direction and goals settings during that period of time. Thanks to Pro Traders Academy in 2017, I am back, revising and preparing to enter into these alternative investments again, building up a side income and funds for my future.
  • Learn new skills and knowledge – Learning is a lifelong philosophy and we must keep on learning and gaining new skills and knowledge, changing and adapting in this climate of constant and highly disruptive economy and society. I started using SkillsFuture in 2017 and I would continue to find new courses to learn new skills and knowledge, adding them to my existing skills and knowledge setup.
  • Avoid and stay away from negative and nasty people – I had seen my fair share of negative and nasty people, who just have a knack for imposing everything of themsleves on other people. There are times whereby they don’t want you to succeed, they want you to fail, their words are nasty and hurting. These type of people really affect me, while people beside me can easily said that I can don’t listen to them and let them affect me, I still got infected and got affected by them, resulting in some hindrance in my journey. The time has come to protect myself from the negative and nasty people by avoiding and staying away from them.
  • Decluttering + Minimalist – It didn’t occur to me how therapeutic it can be for me, decluttering the many physical items in my life. Sometimes, the human race is chasing a lot of physical goods and commodities, there’s no internal and emotional fulfillment at times. Decluttering started in mid 2017, when I did spring cleaning of my room, re-arranging of my cabinets before helping to rearrange some of the cabinets in my living room. There’s some progress, there’s still a lot of work to be done. Next up is Minimalist, would I ever be able to achieve it? I don’t know, to be honest. It’s like an utopia somehow, however, it can be done, the question is, do I want to achieve it?
  • Embrace change and disruption – Although I mentally, emotionally and psychologically prepared myself for change in 2017, the huge waves of changes and disruptions were even more higher and powerful than I initially prepared myself for. Year 2017 became another learning curve for me, I am telling myself and preparing myself again, to embrace change and disruption (reminder that it might even get bigger, higher and powerful than previous editions)
  • STOP Overthinking – It’s one of my flaws that I personally and publicly acknowledged. Taking the steps to stop overthinking, it might not be easy and I am taking the first step.
  • STOP Putting Myself Down – Many a times, I let the words of negative and nasty people into my head, mind and soul, the Bad Wolf started to eat me up inside, transforming into thoughts that made me put myself down. The time also come for me to put a STOP to this.
  • Ikigai – ????, this is something that I am going to discover myself and search for it, the reason.
  • The subtle art of not giving a f*@k – There are a few, maybe a number of people out there that I will not be giving a damn of what you say, comment, feedback or criticize. It’s not that I can’t take criticisms, feedbacks or comments. It’s not the same at all.

To some of you, this may not be the “standards” of goals settings. It’s not for you, this is for me and myself only.

Happy New Year 2018!

1st January 2018, the first day of a brand new year. It’s time for me to start a new chapter, a fresh new beginning, a fresh new start to the year 2018. With all the things that happened in years 2016 to 2017, it’s now over.

I would share briefly on my goals and plans for this year 2018 in another article, coming soon. Due to the amount of disappointments, failures, difficulties and challenges that I faced in 2016 to 2017, I must be nimble, ready for change and adapt as fast as I can.

I just want to wish everybody Happy New Year 2018, with compliments from my cute, adorable and fat family dog (I didn’t head out and take New Year Eve Countdown fireworks on 31st December 2017).

Happy New Year folks! Good luck and all the best in the year 2018!

Reflecting 2017

Today is Sunday 31st December 2017, the last day for the year. In the blink of an eye, another year is going to be over again. Time flies so fast and furious that we all sometimes lose track of our time. This had been a very difficult and tough year, basically it continued on from the year 2016, I thought it would be more of a stablising and foundation year, instead, things never go to plan sometimes and I was thrown off track while trying my best to get things up and running.

I started wrapping up my year 2017 on 1st December, it’s not that I am closing shop for the financial year, it’s more of clearing up as many back logged things/matters to the best of my ability during the final month. Concurrently, I also took the time to deeply reflect on my year 2017 as well as planning and strategising for year 2018.

First and foremost, I would be sharing my reflection 2017 thoughts, feelings and views in my article here today, in no random order of significance:

  • A very difficult and tough year, mentally and emotionally exhausted – Losing 6 people in the space of 1 year from 2016 to 2017 totally drained me out, high and dry. 2 of them were very close to me, my paternal grandmother and big auntie. I wrote remembrance and dedication articles for them, published inside here, my personal website/blog.
  • Things didn’t go as planned, business has been very slow in a very tough, challenging and disruptive environment – Starting a small business at the start of the year 2017 was a huge calculated risk venture, I was mentally and emotionally prepared except that the mountains to climb were so much bigger and higher than I prepared myself for, a lot of lessons learned in my first year of business, whereby most of the time was put into setup, establishing partnerships and networking.
  • Partneships established – During this year, I established working partnerships and collaborations with Hpility SG and The Epiphany Duplet (Tiffany Yong and Peps Goh). I had showcased some of my photography works and collaborations with them during the year 2017, you can find my stories and photos in my photography and travel blog.
  • Behind the scenes / product shoot with The Epiphany Duplet on Love At Second Sight short film project – I was involved with a group of friends working together on The Epiphany Duplet’s short film project, just keep a lookout for my updates in January 2018! I am eagerly awaiting for the release of the short films and I can share/broadcast them!
  • No holidays taken in year 2017 – Due to the extended family matters that took place, I didn’t have the opportunity to take even a short holiday getaway to a destination nearby. I was kind of stressed out without a proper holiday break.
  • Photo book and photo zine postponed – I was planning to produce and publish a new photo book, things never go to plan due to extended family matters and the plans were postponed again to year 2018.
  • No exercise – No excuses, I was lazy and ill-disciplined. This must change, this must stop, I must be disciplined and determined for year 2018, a healthy and active sporting lifestyle.
  • Diet changes – I started reducing my carbohydrates intake in the year 2017, it’s a start and this can still vastly improve further. Working on my diet eating plans for year 2018.
  • Need and Must read more books – I bought some books on business, entrepreneurship and travel. I need and I must read more quality books to feed my brain, mind and soul, to seek improvements, upgrading and learning new skills and knowledge.
  • Acknowledge depression (slight) – The human race is facing lots of stress and pressure in today’s society, we all might (or have faced) depression at some point in time. After a long and thorough self evaluation and deep reflection, I have slipped into a slight depression during this period from 2016 to 2017 (especially in the Q2 and Q3 of 2016)
  • ??? by ??? MayDay – This song means a lot to me, check out their YouTube video and you will understand what I went through and be enlightened.
  • PerseveranceI did a Facebook fun test “What was your most important lesson of 2017?” The result was “Perseverance”. It was totally spot on, jackpot, I didn’t know how I managed to persevere and grinded my way through year 2017 with all the things happening and throwing me off track. The most enlightening matter was I did it, I persevered and I succeeded.
  • Social media / blogging – In this segment, for the year 2017, it’s a year of mixed results for me. Some agencies that didn’t know about me previously started to engage via press releases emails, that’s a start definitely. Some were lost, some got better.
  • Gratitude, Humility, Count my Blessings, Be Thankful – Of all the things that happened during this year 2017, the good and the bad, I am still here, still around. No matter what happeend, I am grateful, I count my blessings.
  • Upgrading, learning new skills – Lifelong learning is my personal philosophy and I will continue to do it forever. There are still so many more skills and knowledge to learn and improve on myself. Personally, I feel that there is a lot more that I can do to upgrade and improve myself, in an era of technological disruptions.
  • No personal photography projects – Due to extended family matters over the past two years, my personal photography projects took a back seat. It’s time to bring it back, complete them and I can embark on new personal photography projects.
  • Disruption by technology, disruption to life and work – Disruption is huge, it will only get bigger, further and wider. Are we ready for them? Or are we too comfortable in our own comfort zone, complacent and ignorant? It’s very scary how technology disruption is going to impact and affect us, in both life and work, in both a good and bad way.
  • Issues in society / friends / family – Human beings are/can be complicated, selfish, lazy and fearful. We all need to work and strive harder, to improve ourselves, judge less, criticise less, learn more, know more and understand more.

At the end of this article, after writing down so many thougths, views and feelings, it’s like something heavy was off my shoulders, mind and soul. Overall, a very difficult and tough year 2017 and I am very happy to wrap them up, close “Year 2017 Account”, archive them and start “Year 2018 Account”.

A new chapter, a new hope, a new and fresh beginning, coming very soon, in less than 24 hours time. The start of “Year 2018 Account”.

2 zines for reading and inspiration

Many years ago, when I first started learning photography, I only thought of capturing moments through my photographs, I didn’t think beyond that. Likewise when I started writing/blogging in the blogsphere and social media platforms as the internet evolves in the past 10+ years, I didn’t think beyond publishing my articles/stories beyond the digital space.

During the journeys inside the blogging/social media/digital landscape, I learned new things, knowledge, skills and unearth my talents that I do not thought that I possessed. Meeting and knowing talented creatives in their own respective fields such as music, writing, photography … ete etc … opened up new adventures into a few new worlds.

One of the new worlds that I was opened to was in the world of publishing and printing. I am still learning and finding my way around it, some years back, I had a plan to convert my blog posts/articles into an e-magazine, somehow or another, due to lack of knowledge, fear, inadequate resources (I am a one person operation) and know how, I didn’t embark on it and this plan didn’t materalise. Fast forward a few years later after that, I visited Hokkaido during November 2014 and I came back, wanting to do more with my travel photographs. An inspiration and a huge personal goal was set, to produce my own photo book. This maiden journey was very exciting (stressful too) and very humbling, while the layout may not be the most “professionally” done, it was my through my hard work and determination, with some help from friends in the photography curation.

With this achievement, I was planning to advance further. Life sometimes never makes things easy for everyone of us, circumstances and life situation changes from 2016 to 2017. These two years were some of the toughest life lessons that I ever have till date. If you had been following my articles here, you would know what happened between 2016 and 2017.

Walking down this lonely road from 2016 to 2017, I picked myself up from the rock bottom and decided to move on, learn more, improve more and challenge myself more (it wasn’t a smooth journey at all, it was slow, difficult and tough). Along the way, I saw posts by creative industry friends based in Tokyo, Japan, on publishing their zines. I followed their updates and developments, soon, I am going to fulfill my goal of publishing my own zines, most likely photography zines. Some years back, I did have a goal of publishing my own zine, something that I did not embark upon.

In the blink of an eye, I got 2 zines from Craig Atkinson and Fernando Gros, in front of me right now, giving me the inspiration on how I want to go about producing and publishing my own zine in year 2018. The style, flow, type of my zine is still in the midst of planning, I won’t be revealing or announcing much as stage in time.

Let me present to you the 2 zines that I just received
