Double Rainbow spotted on 8th July 2017

A rainbow, a beautiful sight on Earth, one of the many wonders by our Mother Nature. I was able to spot rainbow a number of times over the years at different locations in Singapore, it’s always a blessing to be able to see a rainbow.

A double rainbow, is much harder to spot and I haven’t personally spot a double rainbow since the year 2012, check out my previous post here when I shared about my double rainbow story!

On 8th July 2017, I was at the Marina Bay area, on the Esplanade side, photographing National Day Parade (NDP) 2017 rehearsal, this was the National Education 2 (NE2) show. While photographing the pre-parade performances around the Marina Bay, a rainbow appeared above and behind the skyline of Marina Bay Sands! The sight was really gorgeous! A lot of the visitors present around Marina Bay were probably photographing away the view of the rainbow!

As the time quickly progressed, a faint second rainbow appeared at the side of the main rainbow! Finally, I managed to spot a double rainbow again! I quickly turned my attention to the double rainbow, photographing and capturing this wonderful image down on my cameras and my memories. This photograph, was a perfect theme for my number 5,000th post on Instagram, a personal milestone for me, a perfect fit with this double rainbow!

It’s not easy at all to spot a double rainbow and this is a blessing for me, considering the difficult and tough times for my photography business. I am glad that I managed to capture this with the Huawei P10 Plus, a smartphone that I am reviewing currently!

This article titled “Journey with me along with Huawei P10 Plus“, is a prelude to my review articles and photographs that I would be sharing at the end of the Huawei P10 Plus review. For the next few weeks, walk with me, through my eyes, thoughts, views and journeys with the Huawei P10 Plus.

I am also taking this opportunity to constantly remind myself again and again, in this post that I wrote … it’s time to return back to creating quality content with my photographs and stories, through my own vision and direction.

Concentrating and focusing on this area, I can let the toxic and bad wolfs stay away from my brain, heart and soul. I must and I need to let go of the toxic and nasty people around me.

The Huawei P10 Plus smartphone review set is like a lucky star for me, spotting the double rainbow and re-igniting the photography and creative spark inside me again.

You’ll Never Walk Alone! Onward!

NGMN Forum 2017 hosted by Singtel

In January 2017, Singtel hosted Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) Forum in Singapore, held at the Mandarin Orchard Singapore. Although this article post is a bit delayed, the progress and plans for the next generation mobile networks, technology, infrastructure, usage and growth are ongoing, building and expanding towards 5G in Singapore, coming soon in a few years time.

I was at the NGMN Forum 2017 on the first day, listened to the opening address by Assistant Chief Executive and Director-General (Telecom and Postal) Ms Aileen Chia. She shared some key pointers for the participants at NGMN Forum 2017, the future and growth of mobile networks, in Singapore and around the world. While the content and topics looked like they were only for Business to Business (B2B), in reality, the journey towards 5G for Singapore and around the world affects and impacts everybody (in both good and bad ways), from the businesses to the end consumer in the society. The future of the world, also for Singapore, are about technology changes, disruption, innovation and transformation from the business organisations to the end consumers. The information communications sector, economy and society are able to embrace opportunities and challenges. The next big thing is Data, the “new oil” of the 21st century. The future digital economy, IoT (Internet of Things), devices and how we consume data, use data in our daily life and work, this is going to be massive.

After listening to the opening address, I had a tour around some of the partners showcase of their 5G technology and infrastructure. Singtel is making a lot of progress in their 5G journey in Singapore and during an earlier event in August 2016 organised by Singtel that I attended – Singtel and Ericsson were the first to showcase 5G in Southeast Asia. The changes, impacts and opportunities with 5G are coming soon to us in Singapore, on both the B2B and B2C level.

On the B2B level, the partners exhibiting their 5G infrastructure and application of the 5G technology, I saw drones in action that could be activated during natural disaster, robotics obeying the commands of the human hand movement, traffic light control, security and surveillance, all of them powered by the upcoming 5G technology networks.

On the B2C level, as the consumer on the street, what do you think? How would 5G change the way you consume data, communicate with family, relatives and friends? How would 5G help, impact or even affect your work?

5G in Singapore is arriving in a few years time, the groundwork and infrastructure are being prepared and it’s building up speed and momentum.

5G in Singapore by year 2020, maybe it might even be earlier?

Huawei P9 Review

The Huawei P9 smartphone, recently launched in May 2016, garnered a lot of attention around the world with their dual camera lens system in collaboration with Leica. When I first read about the announcement about the Huawei P9 smartphone, I was excited with their dual lens system and their collaboration with Leica, a world famous camera brand.

Recently, I got an opportunity to review the Huawei P9 smartphone camera and I am thankful for the two weeks plus that I had with this smartphone. What happened was that my iPhone 6 had a very bad apps crash and it kind of damaged my rear facing camera and flashlight. Therefore, I wasn’t able to do any live updates with photographs and my Instagram became Latergram. The Huawei P9 provided me with the opportunity to do my mobile phone photography during that two weeks plus review period.

For this review post, I would concentrate on the overall aspects of the Huawei P9 smartphone except for the smartphone camera review that will be in another separate article post.

The Huawei P9 model that I got for my review was the EVA-L19 model, the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM with global dual sim slots. First and foremost, the white colour box was in the form of simplicity and minimalism. Upon opening the box and taking out the Huawei P9 smartphone, the feeling was great. It was premium, elegant and stylish, state-of-the-art industrial design. The feel of the Huawei P9 is really good, smooth finishing and solid smartphone body, thanks to Huawei’s superior-grade 2.5D glass and aerospace-class aluminium.

Huawei P9 is equipped with power and speed, powered by their new Kirin 955 2.5GHz 64 bit ARM-based processor along with a 5.2-inch 1080p display and the 3,000mAh high density battery. Running on Android version 6.0, the operating system is stable, the user interface is very similar to iOS. This resulted in a combination of the iOS user interface features running on an Android platform inside the Huawei P9. For an iPhone user like me who doesn’t have too much experiences with an Android smartphone (even though I own Android smartphones), the experience and transition to use Huawei P9 makes it really fast and smooth. Given the powerful specifications inside the Huawei P9, there were times

The dual sim card slots are most welcome for some of us here, who either have two mobile phone lines or we have to travel overseas for business trips. The first sim card slot is the main sim card slot, micro-sim that is 2G/3G/4G ready while the second sim card slot is nano sim card and it is only for 2G networks. This slot is also where I placed my MicroSD card to let me store my photographs, data and files that I need to work on. During my review period with the Huawei P9, I placed my MicroSD card inside sim card slot 2 and my photographs that were taken were stored directly into my MicroSD card and not on the phone memory.

Therefore, the sim card slot 2 is a combination of nano sim card and MicroSD card slot together. This might be an issue for users who travel overseas and they plan to buy another local sim card into slot 2 together with their main mobile line sim card in sim card slot 1 and their sim card slot 2 is taken up by their MicroSD card.

The power technical specifications and the built quality of the Huawei P9 smartphone are factors that make this smartphone strong. Collaborating with Leica, a world renowned and iconic camera brand, the rear facing dual cameras co-engineered with Leica makes the Huawei P9 smartphone highly desirable, for both work and smartphone photography. When they said the Huawei P9 is reinventing smartphone photography, and after reviewing it for two weeks plus, I agree with the messages that they are sending across. In my earlier sharing on the Huawei P9 press release article, you can read more in depth on their photography system co-engineered by Huawei and Leica packed inside the Huawei P9 smartphone.

For the Huawei P9 smartphone camera review, it is inside another review article dedicated to the photography system by Huawei and Leica, that is on my photography blog. I am very impressed by the smartphone camera capabilities and quality especially the monochrome mode photographs. That is also why I gave it a dedicated camera review. Check out the photographs shot with the Huawei P9 smartphone camera review unit on my Flickr collection.

To me, as a photographer, a technology gadgets enthusiast, a person on the move handling marketing and social media, the Huawei P9 is an excellent smartphone choice that I am most likely going to own it down the road. While it would not replace my iPhone 6, it would most likely to co-exist with my iPhone when I decide to work with 2 mobile phone numbers, one for work and one for personal using a combination of one iOS smartphone and one Android smartphone, capturing the best of both worlds.

I would like to thank Huawei Singapore and Ogilvy Public Relations for giving me the opportunity to review the Huawei P9 smartphone camera.

*Note: The Huawei P9 camera review would be up in the next few days on my photography website*

The Performance Series Race 2 @ Jurong Lake

The second instalment of 5 running events from the The Performance Series, it’s race 2 @ Jurong Lake on Sunday 26th June 2016. This location is not too far away from my home and it’s a beautiful place with lush greenery, Jurong Lake, Japanese Garden and Chinese Garden, making it a good place for exercising and running!

I chose the 10km distance, a running distance that I am comfortable and happy with. The running route at Jurong Lake was pretty tight and narrow thus, there were quite a fair bit of runners traffic jam and that was totally understandable. Nonetheless, if a runner is planning on beating their personal best 10km timing, it might be a bit tricky navigating and overtaking fellow runners! The event was ran and managed pretty well by the organisers. Prior to the run on Sunday, there were quite a lot of rain over the past few days and it made some parts of the event ground wet and muddy. After my run and upon returning home, it was washing the mud off my Asics GT-2000 3 orange running shoes!

In the lead up and preparation towards race 2 at Jurong Lake, I could have and should have done better. Clocking a running time of 1hr 16mins 48s (from my Runkeeper App), it’s an improvement from my race 1 timing of 1hr 28mins 29s (from my Runkeeper App). For this race 2, I added CompresSport Calf Sleeve R2 to my running gear setup, I looked really colourful, orange colour Asics GT-2000 3 running shoes, black colour CompresSport socks, green colour CompresSport Calf Sleeve R2 and the pink colour event running shirt! The CompresSport Calf Sleeve R2 does aid in my running and recovery. I would share more about my views, review and thoughts on the CompresSport running accessories at a later time. I decided not to take a selfie of my whole running attire, I would just share my running shoes and accessories setup instead!

During my article write up on race 1, the organisers had done a good job on social media engagement with the runners and the running event itself. For race 2, they kept it up and good job to the organising and event folks from The Performance Series!

Time to sign up for Race 3 @ Gardens By The Bay! Next target is to improve on my timing from Race 2!

Huawei P9 and P9 Plus

A smartphone that recently made the headlines among the smartphone users and photographers, it is a smartphone equipped with dual lens technology from a world famous iconic camera brand, Leica Camera AG. The Huawei P9 and P9 Plus are the latest flagship devices from Huawei, with this special partnership with Leica, I personally think they would be a good fit together and attract the mobile phone photography users to these two models.

Being a smartphone / mobile phone photographer myself, this is an attractive smartphone that I can use for both work/leisure and mobile phone photography. The opportunity to take monochrome photographs from the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus smartphone, is pretty exciting and attractive for me! I am keen to own the Huawei P9, let’s hope there is a chance in the near future to test it out too!

Huawei P9

Let me share with you more information regarding the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus from the press release information below:

Huawei Consumer Business Group launched the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus, the first smartphones co-engineered with the global iconic brand, Leica Camera AG. The P9’s dual-lens camera takes smartphone photography to the next level, allowing people to capture both vivid colours, as well as striking black and white images.

“Huawei is excited to give P9 users the best smartphone photography experience by leveraging the unrivalled capabilities of Leica, the leader in the world of imaging for more than 100 years,” said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group. “Consumers around the world use their smartphones to take billions of pictures each year, making photography critical to the user experience. P9 users can now capture images with unmatched clarity, richness and authenticity, with a masterfully designed and powerful smartphone that looks and feels incredible.”

Reinventing Smartphone Photography
Integrating the design values and engineering excellence of both Huawei and Leica in a smartphone photography system co-engineered by the two companies, the P9 brings together best-in-class hardware and software, from optical lenses and sensors, to image processing algorithms, empowering users to capture the highest-quality images.

Key to the P9’s superlative imaging capabilities is a dual-camera design that fully unleashes the power of Leica’s optical lenses, renowned for precision and attention to detail, and subject to the industry’s most stringent quality screening requirements. The RGB camera on the P9 specialises in capturing colour, while the monochrome camera is outstanding at acquiring picture detail. The two rear cameras of the P9 work in tandem to enable users to create images of superior detail, depth and colour. The P9 truly excels in low-light conditions, as the dual-camera design guarantees that more light and detail can be captured.

Each picture taken by the P9 carries the unique emotional resonance and timelessness that are the hallmarks of Leica, as users may choose between three film modes: Standard, Vivid Colors, and Smooth Colors, depending on their personal preferences. With meticulous calibration of the P9’s camera parameters, each film mode faithfully renders the authentic color and style of Leica. By selecting the monochrome mode, P9 users can use their devices as a true monochrome camera to capture powerful and evocative black-and-white images of superior quality.

Deploying Huawei’s Hybrid Focus technology, the P9 captures images with superior speed, accuracy and stability. The P9 supports camera focusing based on three methodologies – laser, depth calculation, and contrast – and automatically selects the one that yields the best result in any given environment.

The wide-aperture photography feature on the P9 allows users to experiment with innovative visual effects to create unique images and content. The P9 makes it easy to adjust the camera aperture to create bokeh and other depth-of-field effects, while keeping the main object in sharp focus.

“Leica and Huawei share an uncompromising commitment to imaging excellence, and our partnership will put outstanding photography into the hands of more consumers around the world,” said Oliver Kaltner, CEO, Leica Camera AG. “We are deepening our collaboration to give users a more optimal smartphone photography experience.”

Taking Industrial Design to a Higher Level

The P9 is a masterpiece of state-of the-art industrial design, with the same minimalist design DNA as earlier products in Huawei’s acclaimed flagship P-series premium smartphones. Each P9 device is a perfect construct of superior-grade 2.5D glass and an aerospace-class aluminium, with diamond-cut edges rounded out by carefully balanced curvatures.

The 64GB version of the P9 comes in a stunning and unique Haze Gold finish, setting new industry standards in industrial design, with the use of techniques including brushed hairlines and metal polishing at micron-level precision to create a translucent metal surface. The 32GB version comes in Mystic Silver, Titanium Grey and Prestige Gold, offering a myriad of choices to consumers.

Power and Performance

The P9 is equipped with the power, connectivity and speed that today’s high-end smartphone user expects from Huawei. With a 5.2-inch 1080p display, the P9 is powered by the new Kirin 955 2.5GHz 64-bit ARM-based processor for class-leading mobile performance. The 3,000mAh high-density battery offers P9 users outstanding mobility and battery life.

Huawei is also unveiling the P9 Plus, featuring a 5.5-inch Press Touch display and a larger 3,400mAh battery. The P9 Plus also offers dual-IC Rapid Charge, giving users six hours of talk time after a 10-minute charge.

Leveraging Huawei’s industry-leading capabilities in telecommunications, the P9 and P9 Plus offer unrivaled new features including a virtual-triple-antenna architecture, designed for users who need robust and seamless connectivity to cellular and Wi-Fi networks to fully harness the power of the mobile Internet no matter where they are in the world.

The P9 and P9 Plus also protect users’ privacy and information security with Huawei’s world-leading biometric fingerprint recognition technology. The enhanced fingerprint sensor allows users to personalize and safeguard their devices by significantly lowering the possibility of fraudulent or accidental device access, while also ensuring users can quickly and securely access their smartphone.
