My Yearly Theme for 2023 (Technology | Business | Personal) is “Transform. I published and announced it earlier in Q1 2023, at this halfway mark in 2023, I am reflecting on my journeys and progress, how much have I transformed in the things that I wanted to do. I feel that there is some small progress and changes, I can do more with transforming, changing and adapting for new challenges and a more complex and difficult world environment ahead. 

Technology (Media news coverage | Special interest topics)

My technology media news coverage has slowed down, I highlighted it previously, this is an ongoing challenge that I am facing right now. I still haven’t figured out a solution to this matter, rest assured that I am working on it.

On the areas of special interest topics, I feel that I am making small strides toward a better quality, understanding and informative technology research and writing. I still have a lot of areas to improve on, I continue to strive forward, research, read and understand more in-depth on those special interest topics. On the Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector, I feel that I am making some progress here. As for the areas of sustainability and ESG, I need to do more and get more hands on with those areas.

In-depth interviews

This is an area that I didn’t emphasis on or work on over my years of technology writing and media news coverage. As I slowly progress through covering enterprise technology and special interest research topics, I realised conducting interviews helped me understand the topics that I am working on even better.

In recent months, I embarked on conducting interviews whenever any opportunity arises. A few more interview articles are already in the works and more are being planned.

Business (Digital marketing/Social media marketing & Other business interests)

My initial business expansion plans to integrate digital marketing/social media marketing into my content creation and photography services didn’t exactly get off on a right note. The integration process wasn’t great, I have to work on re-strategising and re-alignment for both sides of the equation to come together fittingly as much as possible.

There are some opportunities in other business interests that I have been looking at for the past few months. It takes a certain amount of risks and funding, not ruling them out and can’t rush into them too.

Business ventures overseas are definitely on my plans, the risks will inevitably increased by a few folds. I have some plans in mind, I am also exploring other opportunities if they arise.

Personal

A segment that I sometimes want to talk more about it, I take a few steps back, reconsider and decide not to do so. I am now very careful and selective on how and what I want to share on social media.

Balancing social on social media

I probably talk more on Twitter (Follow me there!) without sharing too much personal stuff and details. I am pretty private on my personal FB, I try to be more active on my FB Page for my photography business and social media outreach. As for Instagram, I am trying to be a bit more active in posting photos without overdoing it.

Face-to-face is so much more welcomed nowadays, sometimes I wish that we can be more social and meet in real life more often instead of everything social media and messaging.

Trying not to feel old

I recently completed a pre-wedding and actual day wedding shoot for my niece and my now nephew-in-law. While I am trying not to feel old, I can’t escape that I have aged, as well as time doesn’t stop and it will not stop for anyone.

Plans for Q3 2023 & H2 2023

Further integration of interviews into my articles

I am looking at moving up a level higher, adding on more in-depth analysis, research and writing, especially into my special interest topics. While this might meant a bit of compromise for my media news coverage, I have to work on balancing those two out.

Better integration of my digital marketing/social media marketing and collaboration

Whether I am taking a whole project on my own, partnering or collaborating with agencies, I have to work more on this, a better integration of my visual storytelling, photography and writing with my social media/digital marketing or with agencies.

Staying grounded and low key

The challenges ahead are not getting easier, a mix of world economy slowdown and geo-political tensions are not going to help us here.

A reminder to myself to stay grounded and maintaining a low key profile, my life is probably going to be boring for you. I would enjoy my great outdoors in nature, with my photography and writing (When I am not running my business).

Last but not least

Although I will not be able to write down and share everything that happened or took place during Q2 2023 and H1 2023, compiling and writing them down serves as a form of diary, collection of memories and moments.

Some stuff/matters are also private and confidential that I do not want or wish to be shared on social media.

The content, reflections, thoughts, and views might be lengthy and boring to others, even to my friends. Some are probably busy posting on social media platforms flooded with media and videos, we need to know what is happening to them, they don’t want to know what is happening to others.

Writing down my reflections, thoughts, views and upcoming plans are more than a good way of regular writing, constantly honing and improving my writing skills, this is also therapeutic in its own ways.

Key findings from Milieu Insight Survey

What are the Southeast Asia region consumer and investor interests towards green financing and investments? Here are some key findings from Milieu Insight survey:

85% of respondents believe that the choices of individual consumers can collectively create a significant impact on the environment. 54% have chosen to adopt more environment-friendly lifestyle e.g. reducing the use of plastics or recycling.

11% of respondents in Southeast Asia are actively making green investments. Malaysia is at the forefront of this green finance movement with the highest proportion of green investors at 17%. Thailand had the lowest at only 6%.

70% of respondents who have previously backed green investments have increased their allocation in the last 2 years. This indicates an optimistic outlook towards contributing to a more sustainable future.

67% of respondents started investing in the environment because of concerns about environmental protection for the sake of their future generations. 48% want to allocate some of their investment portfolio towards purposeful projects. 43% were influenced by friends or family.

What are people investing in?

The top 3 sectors that people are investing for green investments are:

• Waste management (e.g. recycling facilities) (57%)
• Renewable energy (e.g. solar energy) (54%)
• Green transportation (e.g. electric vehicles) (50%)

For Thailand, renewable energy was the top investment sector (74%), and for Singapore (62%), investors are also attracted to green transportation (61%).

Top motivators cited by investors that would influence their decisions to allocate more funds towards green projects:

• Positive environmental impact (76%)
• Improved market stability (48%)
• Regulations on green reporting, higher financial returns and government incentives (39% each)

While the world has become more increasingly aware of the need to tackle climate change, more than half (53%) who have yet to invest are willing to do so in the future. 41% remain uncertain about investing in the green sector.

A small and humble beginning

TGH Technology and Business Portal/Blog had a small and humble beginning. In 2008, this website was created to separate technology and business topics away from my other portal/blog TGH Photography and Travel, allowing them to specialise in both areas, and allowing me to  expand on food, hospitality and creative side of things.

TGH Photography and Travel Portal/Blog celebrated its 15 years milestone on 10th April 2021, a milestone that I was proud of, the visual storytelling journeys that I embarked on, along with the growth, changes and honing of my craft and skills over the years.

I am humbled by my years of technology and business media news coverage, yet I personally don’t feel doing as much as compared to what I did for my 15 years milestone for my TGH Photography and Travel Portal/Blog.

Growth, Change, and Transformation over the past 15 years

For those brands, organisations, PR agency folks and loyal supports who had worked with me or followed my website over the past 15 years. You will know first hand how much this website has grown, changed and transformed over the past 15 years.

From just covering consumer technology news/topics/interests to covering media news coverage in the enterprise/B2B technology and startups sectors.

The stages of growth, change and transformation started around 5-10 years back when I started to visit more technology conferences, that’s where I ventured into the enterprise technology and startups sectors.

As I grew older along with my websites, my special topics of interest expanded into future technology trends and changes, digital transformation digital marketing/social media marketing, Fin-Tech, blockchain and NFT.

A personal writing space for the writer in me

A personal writing space in a heavy content technology and business sectors might not seem to be the best complement or combination.

Everyone talks about technology jargon and applications, yet there were gaps in how to bring them to the ground level and in a language and style that most people can understand. This might not be the easiest thing to do, it’s not just about your language skills, it’s how you understand the technology, gadgets and how it plays a part in our daily life and work.

Being able to write freely, away and beyond technology and business topics, allowed me to hone and refine my writing skills (and I still have a lot of room for improvement), as well giving me another alternative space for writing on very personal deep in my heart matters, also deep thought leadership and opinions.

Through my years of writing on both visual storytelling approach and in-depth personal thoughts approach, I was encouraged and enlightened by “No Missing Tools: Creativity in an Age of Abundance” by Fernando Gros, that we are and can be creative in our own self, that just need to believe and trust in ourselves for our inner most creativity to be unleashed.

What’s next ahead for TGH Technology and Business Portal/Blog?

15 years not out, I am continuing to strive forward, writing, media news coverage and sharing thought leadership in key areas. What’s next ahead for TGH Technology and Business in the next 5,10, 15, 20 years and beyond?

I can’t see what’s going to happen in the future, I can share what I am working on right now and in the very near future, would be in the areas of

• Expand on special topics of interest such as sustainability
• Future technology trends and changes e.g. Future of Work, Impacts of AI, Digital Transformation, Web 3.0, NFT
• Thought leadership in technology and business industries

15 Years of TGH Technology and Business Portal/Blog

My TGH Technology and Business Portal/Blog is marking and celebrating a 15 years milestone in Year 2023. How has my website and writing transformed over the past 15 years and how am I going to transform my website and writing moving forward? There are probably more questions than answers right now. The answers might appear when I do more in-depth and write more, on both professional and personal basis.

In an upcoming article, I would share more thoughts and feelings behind my 15 years (and still counting) journey, that brought me a lot more than what I could have asked and planned for.

Could the economic and political situations turn for the worst in 2023? We are facing inflation, higher costs of living, economic slowdown (or even possibly world recession) and geo-political worldwide crisis in a worst worst case scenario.

In a period of uncertainties and political crisis in some regions (hopefully it doesn’t escalate beyond that stage into bigger crisis), there might be new opportunities. Time to explore other opportunities as a new set of dark clouds (challenges and uncertainties) looms over 2023.

This has been my staple, regular and constant sector, since I embarked on technology writing on this website. It has evolved over my years of writing and coverage as well. A mature segment, the growth and expansion would not be like before in the early years. I am only adding on new brands/accounts if the opportunity arises along my consumer technology writing journey ahead.

A segment that I am expanding and growing slowly, this accounts for maybe 30% of my technology writing coverage. This is not going to be a fast expanding sector, I am happy with a slow and steady growth.

This business segment has slowed down, maybe this is the time to reorganise, readjust and make strategic changes for this segment that I am integrating with my photography, videography and content creation.

Personal

Post Global Pandemic – Readjusting, Recovering and Brain Fog

We are gradually moving out from the global pandemic situation that kind of turned our world, our living and our work, upside down in 2020.

Moving forward, we are readjusting and recovering, on all fronts, mentally, emotionally, financially. Just like many of us, we all had our fair share of ups and downs, some had it much tougher than others. I have also moved out and away from that dark period, a downward spiral into a rabbit hole. The life lessons coupled with other life situations that cropped up during that period didn’t make it easy for me, it took me some time, recovering and readjusting. Looking back at that period in time, and now looking forward ahead, a different situation and battle ahead.

Brain fog is one of the various long term impacts of this global pandemic COVID-19 that we need to be mindful of. Some symptoms include mental fatigue, lost words, forgetfulness, I have experienced some symptoms, I am going to be more mindful and be more aware of this.

Disappointments

Life is full of disappointments, it’s the harsh and brutal realities that I am facing constantly in my battles in running a business and in life, some people would take the chance to said I am pessimistic, judging me subtly.

Keeping stuff private from social media

While I am active on social media platforms, Twitter, Instagram, FB Page, I am actually quite private on social media even though I kind of rant quite a lot. However, I am keeping stuff private from social media, that’s why you see a lot of my “boring lifestyle” and cute cats photos, nothing exciting to some in this current social media driven obsessed world of sharing/or showing off.

World Economy and Market

The world economy and market is not in a good shape right now, we could be facing a recession soon in 2023, some would argue that the world economy and market is already in a recession. Inflation is high, coupled with a stagnated economy is not good news for us and a dread word many of us fear – Stagflation.

How that would impact our jobs, our business, our living, remains to be seen. Some are wealthy and rich that they don’t worry, some might just be grinding their way through and continue leading a life of display for their social media.

Plans for Q4 2022

Some of my plans are published in my Reflecting Q3 2022 and Plans for Q4 2022 (Photography and Travel) article, that is where you can read the other half of my Q3 reflections and plans for Q4 2022.

What are my plans for my technology, other business and personal side of things?

• Other business: Working on the side lines to make it come true to life.
• Technology: Continue building up my enterprise/B2C segment.
• Personal: Continue striving and improving my emotional and mental health/well-being.

Last But Not Least

This Q3 2022 reflection and plans for Q4 2022 somehow feels pretty lengthy with quite a lot of personal thoughts, feelings, and emotions in the areas of my technology, other business and personal.

In our social media driven world by showing and telling the world what you are doing with photos and videos, not many would be interested to read what I wrote here.

Lots of thoughts and feelings

I am filled with lots of thoughts and feelings, somehow it’s not coherent when I wrote it down, they can be all over the place when I looked back at Singapore’s growth over the decades as I grew old along with you, I look at the current climate, and lastly looking ahead into the future.

It’s not perfect, nothing is perfect in this world at all, yet I count my blessings. Yes, it can be very stressful living here, cost of living, societal pressure and chasing material wealth. On the other side of the story, a peaceful, stable, safe and vibrant cosmopolitan city.

The society and living landscapes are constantly changing and evolving, we don’t need to look further beyond the shores of Singapore. Beyond Singapore, Asia and worldwide, we are in for a period of more uncertainties and higher cost of living.

Lots of thoughts and feelings for today 9th August 2022 as Singapore celebrates her SG57 birthday. I would probably continue more on another day and time.

Emerging from 2+ years of global pandemic

Singapore is emerging from 2+ years of global pandemic situation, it was a very difficult time for Singapore, and for the rest of the world as well, from all aspects of daily living and work. Our financial, emotional and mental health took a heavy hit over the past 2+ years when we were hit by the global pandemic that started in 2020.

Singapore slowly and gradually started to emerge and moved away from this 2+ years of global pandemic in early part of 2022. This was a huge relief for all of us, while we are not totally out of the woods yet, this was a huge step for us in our route to recovery and a return to a more normal life, back to our pre-pandemic days, even though life will never be the same again.

Uncertainties ahead

As the world slowly and gradually move away from the global pandemic COVID-19 that turned the world upside down financially, emotionally and mentally for 2+ years (since 2020), we were eagerly getting our pre pandemic life back again to normalcy. While the recovery in 2022 wasn’t an exponential climb, it’s more of a slow gradual growth instead.

However, there are more uncertainties ahead that lie in front of us, even though we are not out of the woods in relation to the ongoing global pandemic situation. From escalating inflationary pressure causing our prices to go up quite steeply in the first half of 2022 that arises from the conflict situation in Europe.

A looming recession is ahead of us, regional and world peace and stability took another hit with new tensions in the Asia region. What lies ahead for Singapore, our region and the world in the near future?

Quite a lot of uncertainties ahead.

Stronger Together!

Just when we thought we would be returning a life back to normal in a post global pandemic world, we are facing even greater challenges and quite a lot of uncertainties ahead. From exiting one turbulent period and entering into another new turbulent period, this turbulence doesn’t seem to be ending.

One of the themes for SG57 is “Stronger Together”, it’s not getting easier as we initially thought that would be the journey ahead for Singapore as we move away from this global pandemic situation.

Where is Home?

A topic that was recently in the local papers, on where is home? What does home means to you and me? The global pandemic situation that caused the whole world that much trouble on all aspects of our daily living and work, gave us a lot of food for thought on where is our home truly?

Something for you to ponder, think deeply, into your heart, mind and soul, is Singapore the country you truly call it your home?

Let me introduce my Yearly Theme 2022 for my Technology, Business and Personal: “Onward”.

Theme for Year 2022 (Technology, Business and Personal) – Onward

Onward – What is the reason behind this theme?

Why “Onward”? This is actually my alma mater school motto. Let me introduce my alma mater, Gan Eng Seng School (founded in 1885), I am also an old boy from the Gan Eng Seng Dragon Scout Group (founded in 1922) where I spent some of my best and fun years learning Scouting skills, knowledge, in the the great outdoors, life skills and camaraderie.

Dragon Scout Group (DSG) is celebrating its centenary milestone in Year 2022, this is no mean feat! The DSG extended family is going to celebrate DSG100 Years in Scouting!

Onward – Strive forward as we work our way out from this ongoing global pandemic mess, it’s not just an economic and financial crisis, the world is facing other crisis in the areas of healthcare, mental health, emotional health, psychological and sociological issues.

The whole world is trying its best to move forward, with setbacks and hiccups that are going to be a common sight for this year 2022. Hopefully, our lessons learnt in Year 2020 and 2021 would come in handy for us as the world move Onward in the journey to recovery. Let’s hope the world can really start to see the true light at the end of the tunnel.

This is not the usual way of doing goal settings that you would normally learn or see in your job/training. What I am doing is a bit of a hybrid format sharing of my goals and plans for my technology, business and personal segments.

Consumer Technology

I have been covering consumer technology sector since the launch of this website. It is stable and well-established, covering about 70% of my total news coverage here. I would take this year to review where I can change and improve in the areas of consumer technology news coverage, gadget reviews etc.

Enterprise Technology

A small segment that is slowly growing and expanding. Enterprise technology/B2B technology is not the easiest to cover and write about this segment.

Business

Media Relations

My media relations and networks with pr agencies have expanded out of Singapore, reaching the shores of Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia. I would continue to build new media relations and networks whenever possible.

As for my existing media relations and networks, I am thankful and grateful for the working relationships and engagements over the years with brands, organisations and pr agencies. Let’s continue to work closer together in this Year 2022.

During Q4 2021, I mentioned about cryptocurrency and NFT on this website. Approaching and entering from a technology news coverage and business opportunities perspective, I am threading with caution and optimism in these two areas for this year.

These 2 sectors cryptocurrency and NFT would be interesting and exciting yet cautious at the same time for me in this Year 2022.

Photography Business

On my photography business segment, you can find more in-depth thoughts and views on my TGH Photography and Travel Portal/Blog.

The past 2 years, 2020 and 2021, our life and work has been severely disrupted due to the global pandemic that is still ongoing. For those who run a small business like myself, the past 2 years had been very difficult and tough, mentally and emotionally exhausting.

Year 2022 is not going to be smooth sailing, let’s hope the whole world can get themselves together to navigate our way out from this global pandemic situation.

Personal

I may be tweeting/sharing a lot of thoughts on Twitter, some of them are transferred over to Instagram. However, you don’t see me sharing a lot on Facebook. As compared to some of my friends, I might be sharing a lot more, while versus to another group of friends who who share a lot of their personal and family photos, I am very quiet and private on my personal Facebook.

You are not going to see too many photographs of a personal basis on Facebook or Instagram. I am exercising more privacy on sharing personal photos, social media in recent years has been mentally draining at times.

Yes, I tweet a lot a.k.a. “speak a lot” on Twitter. Some of them are my thoughts, views and feelings ranging from business, issues that I am concerned with, as well as key opinions, thought leadership. Last but not least – Onward in Year 2022

Last but not least – Onward in Year 2022. After some harsh lessons from Year 2021, I decided to be cautious, not fearful, be brave, Be Prepared, ready to take on more challenges, hiccups and changes as I trek my way Onward in Year 2022.

I really hope this Year 2022 would truly be the year where we can see some light at the end of the tunnel.

CES 2022 is taking place in January 2022, I would be starting coverage on them with the media news updates that I received from the brands/organisations that have sent me media news in December 2021.

Yearly Theme and goals for Year 2022

During the last week of Year 2021, I spent some time reflecting as well as planning and strategising for Year 2022. I have tentatively selected my yearly theme for my photography and travel and technology, business and personal in this Year 2022, along with goals that I am setting for myself in the Year 2022. Administrative Work and Back Up Time

A new FY2022, administrative work needs to be done, backing up and keeping FY2021 records and documentations, whether it’s hard copies or files stored inside my computer. Next would be setting up FY2022 folders.

Spring cleaning in preparation for CNY 2022

Chinese New Year (CNY) 2022 is just 4 weeks away, CNY 2022 falls on 1st February and 2nd February 2022. Spring cleaning in preparation for CNY 2022 starts this week, I would clear, pack up, rearrange and replace my things in stages, every small step/spring cleaning leads to a bigger picture of a lesser packed/messy WFH.

A New Journey has Begun

A new journey has begun, what lies ahead is still unknown due to the ongoing global pandemic situation. I would share more of my thoughts and views in my 2022 yearly theme and goals. Personally, I am cautious for Year 2022, I don’t wish to get myself into another false sense of optimism when Year 2021 started.

Stay safe and take good care of health, mental and emotional well-being as we continue to battle and find a way out from this global pandemic situation.

I am taking a rest during this New Year long weekend break, consolidate and prepare myself for a new year ahead. This is going to be a quiet weekend, writing on personal topics, I would be sharing my yearly theme soon, along with some of my plans, thoughts and views for this year 2022 before returning back to media news coverage on the technology and business sectors.

In case you missed it, here’s my Reflecting 2021 (Technology, Business and Personal) and also my Reflecting 2021 (Photography and Travel) on my other portal/blog. Today marks the start of a brand new year, a new hope and a fresh new beginning.

There were so many twists and turns of events and many more ups and downs during last year 2021. After reflecting on the year as a whole, I am now taking both the good and bad lessons from there. There’s a lot of things to let go and put it behind me before starting my new journey in Year 2022.

Another new chapter is starting, a new hope, a New Year 2022.     

Once again, wishing everyone a Happy New Year 2002! Stay safe and healthy as we continue battling this ongoing global pandemic. Let’s spread love, kindness, compassion to the people around us, our society and around the world!

Consumer Technology

For this segment, it has been stable since establishing this website in January 2008, consumer technology news take up approximately 70% of my technology content media news coverage.  While I am still covering consumer technology news, I have also diversified and expanded into the fields of Fin-tech, blockchain, cryptocurrency and NFT that I have a keen interest in. They are not just for news coverage, I have an intrinsic interest in them for both business/investments as well as cross-disciplinary work with my commercial photography.

Enterprise Technology

This is still a relatively small and growing segment for my website. This is not an easy sector to cover and write due to the niche industries, you might/usually need industry and technical expertise as well. I am still working on growing enterprise technology sector news coverage, I would also like to thank the agencies that I am working with by linking up relevant enterprise technology companies with my website.

Business

Digital Marketing/Social Media Marketing/Digital Agency

An area that I identified earlier in the year that I can diversify into that integrates both my photography and travel website, social media, digital marketing and writing together. I went for upgrading courses to get myself certified too. The establishment of TGH Digital Studio is still relatively new and unknown, a lot of work still needs to be done, strategic planning and directions, and finding suitable partners to work together with.   

Media Relations

Although Year 2021 had been a very difficult year for me in many aspects, there were some good growth and developments in media relations segment. My networks and engagements went beyond the shores of Singapore, I am getting media news updates from agencies based in Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia and England.

I hope to build on those new connections and networks, expanding not just in the fields of technology, business and in the areas of my photography and travel sectors as well.

Personal

Mental Health and Emotional Health

Year 2021 was my most emotionally and mentally drained year till date in my life. This was also the time I started to know more about mental health, the issues, awareness, why it matters. The ongoing global pandemic has disrupted not only our daily and working life, it has also seriously impacted and affected our mental and emotional well-being.

The elevated stress and pressure from running and operating a business during a global pandemic crisis with many uncertainties and unknowns, add in family matters concerns and a very personal situation, combining all together resulting in falling and spiralling into a rut. That period was very dark for me personally. I am very grateful and thankful to a few friends who pulled me out from a tipping point.

Running a business brings many additional levels of stress and pressure, throw in a global pandemic crisis into the equation, the levels are at an unprecedented level that we can ever imagine, understand and handle, unless you are right in the deep end of it.

There were many lessons on life, business, mental and emotional health/well-being that were bestowed upon me, in both good and bad ways in the Yr2021. I will learn from them, from both good and bad points.

A reminder to myself to constantly remind myself to never let myself fall as low as I did in Yr2021.

Last but not least

Year 2021 had been a very turbulent year of many ups and downs, disappointments and heartaches from unnecessary expectations. There were many life and business lessons handed out to me, priceless and painful.

Signing off Year 2021 with a beautiful sunset to say goodbye to Year 2021, good riddance to bad rubbish. It’s been a very painful time, very difficult and tough, mentally, emotionally and financially for me personally. I will learn, remember and apply the good and bad lessons from this year. I will also make sure that I will never let myself fall as low as what happened to me in 2021.

Year 2022 is starting soon, a new year, a fresh and brand new start in an ongoing global pandemic situation. I would share more about my plans and directions in the Year 2022 for my technology, business and personal segments inside my upcoming Theme and Goals for Year 2022 article.

To all those who had pulled me up when I was down at the bottom, as well as those who supported and encouraged me throughout this very difficult Year 2021, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart, no amount of words can show my utmost appreciation towards what you all had done for me.

It’s time to say Goodbye Year 2021 and Welcome Year 2022.
