Samsung Electronics Singapore recently unveiled its 2024 lineup of Neo QLED 8K, Neo QLED and OLED TVs, as well as their latest sound systems as its Samsung Unbox & Discover 2024 Singapore launch event held at the iconic Jewel Changi from 28 to 30 March 2024 whereby Samsung Electronics unveiled 2024 line-up of new AI TVs and sound systems.

Samsung’s year 2024 lineup kicks off the Samsung AI screen era through the induction of a next-generation AI processor that is poised to redefine the perception of smart display capabilities. More than just bringing improved picture and sound quality, the new AI TV line-ups provide consumers with AI-powered features focusing on inspiring and empowering individual lifestyles.

Expect More Wow with Samsung’s New 2024 AI TV Line-up

Samsung is introducing AI technologies to its Samsung TV line-up for 2024, delivering elevated enhancements for consumers’ home entertainment setups.

Samsung 2024 Neo QLED 8K and 4K TV 

Samsung’s newest Neo QLED 8K and 4K TV line-up are equipped with technology that delivers lifelike picture quality and premium audio experiences. For the 2024 Neo QLED 8K range, the top model QN900D features Samsung’s latest and most innovative TV processor yet – the NQ8 AI Gen3, which has a neural processing unit (NPU) that delivers unprecedented performance upgrades by utilising 512 neural networks, versus 64 neural networks on last year’s 2023 flagship model.

The Neo QLED line-up brings a suite of picture quality and design enhancing features, including 8K AI Upscaling Pro (1), which leverages NQ8 AI Gen3 for enhanced 8K upscaling, sharpening low resolution content so that it is displayed in ultra-high resolution.

There is the AI Motion Enhancer Pro that solves common issues in fast-paced sporting contents – such as ball distortion – by streaming high-resolution sports matches through this feature (2) powered by NQ8 AI Gen3. The feature automatically detects the sport type and uses deep learning to properly detect the type of ball and enhances the visual accordingly.

For consumers who like watching high-adrenaline action content, Real Depth Enhancer Pro adds details to fast-moving scenes with the help of AI to control precision of the mini-LEDs by detecting the part of a scene that the human eye would naturally focus on, bringing it to the foreground. In this way, the images are more lifelike as there is more depth to the onscreen content.

There is also the Infinity Air Design that complements Neo QLED 8K’s impeccable picture quality with a screen only 12.9mm in depth (3). This would allow an immersive viewing experience that focuses on high resolution and outstanding sound quality. This feature also offers a unique mirror effect in which the TV appears to hover in its surroundings.

With Samsung’s Q-Symphony, the Neo QLED 8K line-up offers exceptional audio quality, allowing users to connect multiple wireless speakers and a sound bar to a TV or projector for perfect audio synchronisation across shows, movies, and playlists (4).

Users can take advantage of the Active Voice Amplifier Pro, a proprietary AI dialogue booster that utilises exclusive deep-learning technology to significantly enhance dialogue and voices on screen.

Samsung 2024 OLED TV

For Samsung 2024 OLED TVs, they are built on the legacy of 2023 models, with the S95D offering sizes of up to 77-inches for high-detail, high-frame rate, and intense vibrant video.

There is a new OLED Glare Free’ technology (5) – specifically designed for 2024 OLED screens. This preserves colour accuracy and reduces reflections while maintaining image sharpness to ensure an immersive viewing experience, even in daylight.

The OLED-optimised, low-reflection coating overcomes the trade-off between gloss and reflection, thanks to a new, specialised hard-coating layer and surface coating pattern.

This year 2024 OLED display is 20% brighter than previous models, with deep and rich blacks, and AI-enhanced colour accuracy so pure that it is Pantone Validated™. Not only are they Samsung’s brightest OLED screen yet, they now also features high refresh rates of up to 144Hz for more seamless motion and crystal-clear action on their screens. There are also more price friendly options, the S90D series, which will be available in various sizes, from 48” to 83”.

New Samsung flagship Q Series sound bar

There is also a new Samsung flagship Q Series sound bar, the HW-Q990D, that completes your Samsung home entertainment audio experience. This delivers an 11.1.4-channel sound experience with True Dolby Atmos sound at 4K 120Hz, tapping on AI to optimise sound for the perfect experience, whatever is your preferred media content.

Samsung partners National Heritage Board to bring a part of Singapore’s Cultural Heritage to Samsung The Frame TV. Singtel is offering Disney+ Premium to its customers, starting with new and re-contracting mobile subscribers. From 7th March 2024, they will get to enjoy up to 12 months of Disney’s extensive collection of Hollywood blockbusters and APAC originals – at no extra cost. This is part of Singtel’s commitment to providing superior service and quality content to customers across its TV, mobile and broadband offerings.

Singtel Disney+ Premium promotion for its mobile, TV and broadband customers

This Singtel Disney+ Premium promotion for its mobile, TV and broadband customers, is bundled with Singtel’s 5G mobile postpaid plans and SIM Only Plus plans so customers can enjoy a smooth viewing experience on Singtel’s ultra-fast and low latency 5G network, with Disney+ Premium (with a retail price of $15.98 per month) supporting 4K UHD and HDR video playback on supported titles. Customers will also be able to catch their favourite shows on up to four devices at the same time, allowing families or people in the same household to enjoy a seamless viewing experience on the popular streaming service.

Mobile customers currently enjoy complimentary lifestyle and education content packs for CAST, Singtel’s video streaming app, depending on the type of SIM Only Plus plans they have opted for, while all postpaid plans come with at least one month of Spotify, Entertainer, and Straits Times One Digital subscriptions. From 7 March, new and re-contracting mobile subscribers will also get Disney+ at no additional cost. This promotion will be progressively extended to broadband and TV customers, and all customers will be able to subscribe to Disney+ directly through Singtel in the future. Singtel celebrates Singapore’s 58th Birthday with Smart Nation journey short film titled, “From Mudflats to Smart Nation”. This is also to commemorate founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s 100th birth anniversary. The short film title alludes to Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s famous quote from Singapore’s 1st year of independence in 1965 when he spoke about turning Singapore from mudflats into a metropolis. Besides going into Mr Lee’s vision for Singapore, this 23-minute documentary charts its rise from a fledging nation to global economic hub through a telecoms and technology lens, exploring how Singapore leveraged connectivity, communication and digital content to get ahead economically and become today’s Smart Nation that we all know of.

Act 1 – In his speech on 12 September 1965, shortly after Singapore had become independent, former prime minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew shared his vision for Singapore

This short film also features Singtel Group’s leaders sharing for the first time, their unique perspectives on the Singapore growth story, having themselves being a part of this remarkable journey of survival and reinvention.

“As we celebrate Singapore’s 58th birthday, it is timely to examine how Singapore innovated its way to the present where we stand on the cusp of mainstream 5G adoption, another critical technology milestone that’s paving the way forward for our Smart Nation,” said Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, Singtel Group CEO. “Given our beginnings as the country’s sole telecoms company, we feel extremely privileged to have been able to support Singapore’s development through the decades from launching satellite services and laying the first submarine cable, to providing fibre and internet access to every household. True to our purpose to empower every generation, we are glad that our innovation focus and strategic investments have helped Singaporeans to get ahead, even through the recent global pandemic, demonstrating the critical role of telecoms and technology in ensuring better lives and livelihoods for our community.”

This short film presented a number of interviews with key personnel, with Group CEO, Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, Group CFO, Mr Arthur Lang; NCS CEO Mr Ng Kuo Pin; Singtel board member and former Chairman and General Manager of the National Computer Board (NCS’s precursor), Mr Lim Swee Say; as well as Deputy CEO AIS and former Singtel Group CTO, Mr Mark Chong. This film also reveals both Singapore and Singtel’s forward looking strategies that propelled the city state from a rural village to intelligent nation.

“Singapore’s economic success is no secret but less known is how the country leveraged telecoms and technology to turbo charge its progress, allowing a small city state like ours to leapfrog ahead of the competition and give Singaporeans a head start in nation building. Today, as 5G opens up the next chapter in our Smart Nation journey, it is useful to take stock of Singapore’s clever use of technology and the potent ingredients that have gone into the making of the Singapore brand so we can all keep ideating for the future,” said Ms Lian Pek, Singtel’s Vice President of Strategic Communications and Brand.

Singtel 5G story

Last July, Singtel completed its standalone 5G rollout across the country, three years ahead of regulatory targets. This turned Singapore’s 57th National Day celebrations into the country’s largest consumer use case as 25,000 spectators tapped 5G to live stream the parade.

Singtel’s 5G leadership has seen it climb up the brand rankings. According to consultancy Brand Finance, Singtel was the 6th strongest telecom company globally this year, up from 9th place. It also retained its place as Singapore’s strongest brand across all sectors.

From Mudflats to Smart Nation – Synopsis and treatment

Watch “From Mudflats to Smart Nation” in 3 acts, the documentary traces the build-up of Singapore’s communications infrastructure in the post-independence years, to nationwide computerisation in the eighties, the subsequent adoption of Information Communications Technology with the advent of the internet, right up to today.

The story is captured through rarely seen footage and photos of Singapore and Mr Lee, that will transport viewers through time from rural Singapore to thriving urban powerhouse. Treated with Parallax visual effects, the photos have been rendered 3D, bringing to life the lives and times of Mr Lee and generations of Singaporeans.

Older Singaporeans can enjoy a nostalgic walk down memory lane while the younger generation can appreciate Singapore’s humble beginnings and see how far it has come as a nation.

Act 1: Laying the foundation

Act 1 – To connect all households and businesses across the island, Singtel, embarked on a massive exercise to lay telephone lines nationwide

The 1960s to 1970s was a period of rapid urbanisation as Singapore sought to improve the living conditions of citizens while creating employment. The documentary shows how the Singapore Telephone Board laid the infrastructure that connected homes and businesses to each other and the world. The laying of submarine cables and launch of the country’s first satellites created the connections that allowed Singapore to establish itself as an international hub, attracting foreign investment and achieving full employment for its people. This period also saw the start of technology adoption and refreshes that occurred throughout Singapore’s development, such as the phasing out of rotary dial phones and switch to push-button telephones.

Act 2: Going international

Act 2 – The government began computerising all its services in a bid to harness technology to upskill workers and support the nation’s internationalisation.

As a small market, Singapore has always needed to head overseas to grow its economy. Act 2 chronicles this next phase of growth that focused on harnessing technology to upskill workers and scale businesses to support the nation’s internationalisation. This began with the computerisation of government services which took a “citizen-centric” approach as NCS CEO Mr Ng Kuo Pin puts it. Across the country, students learnt how to use the internet and businesses upskilled their employees. By the 1990s, the telco sector in Singapore was liberalised, prompting Singtel to expand into the region by investing in Australia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. With the advent of the internet, Singapore invested heavily in fibre networks that can transmit large amounts of data for faster internet access with the view of supporting greater trade and communication. This took Singapore into the fibre age, heralding the next frontier of telecommunication services – an info-communications sector.

Act 3: Staying competitive 

Act 3 – Using 5G’s low latency and high-speed connectivity, a healthcare professional trials the use of high-resolution 3D images of organs

With rapid digitalisation comes greater opportunities for innovation. Singapore has always been among the first countries in the world to roll out 3G, 4G, and now 5G. History has shown that Singapore’s early adoption of technology has been forward-looking, coming years ahead for example, of mass consumer devices that tapped such technology like the smartphone. With Singtel investing heavily in 5G to achieve nationwide coverage in 2022, businesses are now free to experiment with artificial intelligence, machine learning and other technologies that require low latency and high-speed connectivity to innovate products, solutions and business models. The film concludes with Mr Lee urging citizens to “follow the rainbow” and to “ride it.” Seen in today’s context of Singapore as a Smart Nation, this call to action remains just as relevant as Singapore continues to innovate to stay ahead of the curve.

1st April 2023 doesn’t just mark the start of a new quarter, Q2 2023, this also marks the start of my new social media adventure – TikTok. I have decided to start a new social media journey on a new platform. Oh yes, this is not an April Fool’s Day joke, it’s for real!

Jumping onto the TikTok platform

Finally, after some delays and procrastination over a period of time, I am finally jumping onto the TikTok platform. Previously, I had been thinking, deliberating and considering whether to hop onto the TikTok platform since I wasn’t sure how I would leverage and use TikTok along with my other social media platforms.

TikTok is unique in its own sense, style, character and following. They are more of an entertainment platform than a social media platform, even though they are a form of social media. Therefore, hopping onto TikTok would require a new and different set of social media strategies and direction.

TikTok vs Instagram vs YouTube

How would I differentiate my content creation, direction and style across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, considering that there are similarities and features across those platforms?

As I am revising my social media and digital marketing strategies across my social media platforms, websites/blogs/portals, I am looking at the following strategies for the start

  • Long form videos/short films/Vlogs – YouTube
  • Vertical videos/fun/vertical Vlogs/Social Selling – TikTok
  • Stills photography and cross posting vertical videos – Instagram

On the subject of type of content creation genres for TikTok platform, maybe this might be a good time to reimagine and relaunch how I would use my social media, even though I don’t think I can match the level of the Generation Y and even younger Generation Z in their TikTok game, creativity and freedom to freely share.

An area that I would leverage and expand more on TikTok would be showcasing areas of my photography (bringing camera reviews, hands on experiences, street photography into an interactive video/social media format etc), travel stories as well as social selling.

On the subject of social selling, there are opportunities of business collaborations that I can work together from other industries. Let’s chat and see how we can develop this business collaboration together!
