CES 2019 was recently held at Las Vegas, Nevada, from 8th January to 11th January 2019. There were many brands, products showcase and announcements during the whole event. I am covering and sharing some of the brands new products and technology announcements in the next few days as well. Today, I am sharing on a technology topic that had caught my attention and interest a few years back, on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

During CES 2019, LG Electronics presented a corporate keynote address on, “AI for an even better life” on 7th January 2019, at the MGM Park Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, by LG Electronics (LG) president and CTO Dr. I.P. Park. LG’s CTO Dr. Park outlined how the three key pillars of artificial intelligence – Evolve, Connect and Open – could deliver a robust AI ecosystem with diverse solutions for the real world. The LG CLOi GuideBot shared the spotlight with Dr. Park during the address, becoming the first ever robot to help deliver a CES keynote in the process.

“Is technology making your life better?” Dr. Park began his keynote by asking the audience. “Over the past 100 years, household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and vacuum cleaners have reduced time spent on housework by around 75 percent, but the amount of cognitive labor involved has significantly increased.” Dr. Park explained, “The answer lies in AI – but only if we can achieve true intelligence.”

LG’s AI brand, the LG ThinQ was launched in 2017. Their ThinQ is now a part of their diverse line up of products, from smartphones to household appliances such as air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and vacuum cleaners, the AI chip inside them.

“But I want to talk about more than just improvements,” Dr. Park continued. “Our ambition is to go way beyond LG’s current role as a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics and to become a lifestyle innovator that serves a truly intelligentway of living.” Proclaiming LG’s vision for the age of artificial intelligence, Dr. Park explained how the three key ideas – Evolve, Connect and Open – will empower AI technology to transform every aspect of daily life. LG ThinQ products will evolve over time by learning about the user, connect seamlessly with customers’ lives and open up an eco-system of innovation made stronger by partnerships and cooperation, ultimately offering “a new and daring definition of better life.”

Along with the upcoming 5G networks around the world, coupled with AI technology, autonomous driving is another sector that is coming up into our life in the near future. LG is moving into this sector, from the home to the road. LG’s AI-enabled cabin solution will help users make the fullest use of their time saved from not driving, turning their vehicles into a conference room, movie theater or even personal shopping boutique.

“Building this new in-car experience requires a wide range of different solutions in both hardware and software… which is why we need OPEN collaboration.” said Dr. Park, illustrating LG’s continued efforts to facilitate a culture of open innovation. He introduced LG’s collaboration with the leading seat manufacturer Adient to develop smart seats for a more personalized in-car experience. Also announced was LG’s new plan for its operating platform webOS which has been open sourced since March 2018. “From this year, we’ll be adding to webOS open access to LG’s proprietary AI platform for developers all around the world.” said Dr. Park.
