City Energy’s EV charging arm, Go by City Energy, pioneers App-Free EV Charging in Singapore and Malaysia. This is Singapore’s first app-free EV charging experience, a milestone bringing drivers a new level of convenience, making green mobility more accessible across Singapore and Malaysia.

New “AutoCharge” System – Simply Plug In and Charge

With the new “AutoCharge” system, EV drivers could simply plug in and charge, with no QR codes or logins required apart from a one-time set-up on the Go by City Energy app (known as City Energy Go on the iOS Appa and the Google Play Stores). This seamless experience is now available across more than 200 charge points in Singapore and  Malaysia , through a strategic with JomCharge – a network operated by EV Connection, one of Malaysia’s leading EV charging providers.

“We are now redefining the EV charging experience by making it truly effortless,” said Mr. Perry Ong, Chief Executive Officer of City Energy. “With AutoCharge, EV drivers only need to register their vehicle once on our app. After that, they can simply plug in and power up without touching their phones – no apps, no QR codes, no hassle. EV charging with Go by City Energy could now be the most intuitive and appealing experience for EV drivers.”

At launch, Go buy City Energy will offer the AutoCharge feature at five locations: Pullman Singapore, Hill Street, Klimt Cairnhill, Komo Shoppes, North Gaia and North Park Residences. Plans are in place to progressively roll out the feature to customers islandwide.

This initiative reflects City Energy’s commitment to a greener Singapore, with over $100 million set to be invested in EV charging infrastructure across private residential and commercial sites by 2030.

How the “AutoCharge” Technology Works

The AutoCharge system uses the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) issued by Go by City Energy and the EV’s unique Charge Controller ID (EVCC ID) to identify and authenticate the EV at the charge point. When an EV is plugged in, the charger automatically detects the EVCC ID through the EV’s onboard systems via the DC charging connector.

The following EV car brands are compatible with AutoCharge, AION, BYD, Chery, MG and Tesla. Go by City Energy is actively working with other car manufacturers to expand compatibility across a growing number of EV brands.

Why It Matters

EV cars ownership continues to rise in Singapore, driver expectations around charging convenience are also rising. Some of EV drivers common frustrations are sporadic network connectivity in carparks, fragmented app ecosystems, and compatibility concerns, can discourage adoption.

Today, most public EV charge points still require drivers to scan a QR code or log into a mobile app before charging can begin. This process may be often disrupted by poor internet connectivity in carparks, and drivers may also face the inconvenience of having to juggle multiple apps to access different charging networks. Compatibility concerns add further uncertainty, especially when travelling across borders.

These common frustrations can discourage EV adoption and add unnecessary friction to what should be a simple, everyday activity, AutoCharge made available by Go by City Energy will eliminate these pain points.

How to Register for AutoCharge

To activate AutoCharge, users can reach out to Go by City Energy to request for a VIN, which must then be registered with the Go by City Energy app. This one-time set-up enables the system to automatically recognise the vehicle at Go by City Energy’s AutoCharge enabled charging points.

When the EV is first plugged in, the charger detects the EVCC ID via the EV’s onboard system through the DC charging connector. The user will then be prompted to unplug and reconnect the charger to complete the pairing.

After the details are keyed in, the user will be required to plug in the charging cable into their EV, unplug it and charge it again. Once registration is complete, drivers can change at participating AutoCharge enabled charge points in Singapore and Malaysia without further interaction.
