Grab launched JustGrab service

Grab recently launched a new service, bringing JustGrab for GrabTaxi and GrabCar vehicles together, forming the largest supply of on-demand vehicles in Singapore.

The topic of dynamic pricing is a topic for discussion here and through the information shared below, it would give a better understanding of the overall picture.

Let me share with you more information and details from the press release information below:

Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading ride-hailing company, announced JustGrab, a new service that brings together fixed fare GrabTaxi and GrabCar vehicles to form the largest supply of on-demand vehicles in Singapore.

With increased vehicle supply, passengers can experience the most affordable taxi or private-hire car rides at a common fixed fare, subject to dynamic pricing, and shorter waiting time. The JustGrab service will be beta tested from today and progressively rolled out to Grab’s tiered GrabRewards customers first, before general public availability on 29 March.

With JustGrab, passengers need only tap a button to find the nearest fixed fare taxi and car within their vicinity. The JustGrab fleet comprises all HDT, Premier, Prime, SMRT, Trans-cab and GrabCar driver-partners to offer the following benefits:

? Lower fares with dynamic pricing: Dynamic pricing adjusts to real-time market demand, resulting in cheaper fares at low demand periods. By uniting fixed fare taxis and cars as one, the increased vehicle supply means JustGrab fares will fluctuate less and be more affordable throughout the day.

? Fret over surcharges no more: Traditional taxi surcharges such as midnight and Central Business District (CBD) charges no longer apply to JustGrab fares. Passengers’ trip fares, excluding toll charges added at the end of the journey, are reflected on the booking screen, giving them full knowledge and certainty of their trip fares before making their bookings.

? More travel options at different price points: JustGrab complements Grab’s existing GrabTaxi and GrabCar services to offer commuters another point-to-point on-demand travel option with Grab. Commuters who prefer metered fares can continue to use GrabTaxi, while those who prefer private-hire cars can go for GrabCar.

? JustGrab and get going: Access to the largest network of fixed fare rides means shorter waiting time for passengers. JustGrab finds passengers the nearest available fixed fare taxi or private-hire car ride within the vicinity at affordable, guaranteed fares.

“At Grab, we believe in pooling together resources to solve urban mobility issues. JustGrab combines the strengths of taxis and cars to improve the efficiency and affordability of point-to-point transportation in Singapore. We are positive that JustGrab will help shave waiting time for rides by up to five minutes, and bring us closer to our goal of ensuring commuters get a Grab ride within three minutes every time. Our hope is to encourage more people to use shared transportation over personal cars, and offer our driver-partners additional income opportunities from our growing passenger base,” said Melvin Vu, Head of GrabTaxi Singapore.

Making driving with Grab more sustainable with new driver care initiatives

With a strong commitment to driver care, Grab is enhancing benefits for GrabTaxi driver partners and introducing additional perks for top-tier GrabTaxi driver-partners under the Platinum Plus and Platinum programme, a rebrand of the Elite and Rangers programme:

GrabTaxi Platinum Plus and Platinum driver-partners will receive quarterly bonuses equivalent to and at half the previous quarter’s incentive payouts, respectively. The bonus comes on top of the incentive that they receive the current quarter, enabling driver-partners to earn more while driving with Grab.

In addition, all GrabTaxi driver-partners will receive a monthly eight percent Medisave contribution from Grab, based on their earned incentives, to help build up their Medisave savings. Grab’s Platinum Plus and Platinum driver-partner enjoy higher Medisave contribution at 15% and 10% respectively.

The quarterly bonuses and monthly Medisave contribution are the latest additions to Grab’s series of driver care initiatives. Grab also constantly recognises Platinum Plus and Platinum drivers for their high-quality service and hard work by rewarding them with special incentives, priority queues at Grab’s Driver Support Centres, and loyalty programmes such as subsidised holiday trips with fellow driver-partners and their families.

Journey to 5G: Singtel & Ericsson working together on Massive MIMO and Cloud RAN

The journey to 5G in Singapore, in the article that I wrote about earlier, is in the process of picking up speed and momentum. Adding on to what I shared, Singtel and Ericsson made an announcement in February 2017 that they are working together to pilot Massive MIMO and Cloud RAN on Singtel 4G LTE network, two key components in the journey to 5G in Singapore.

The information that I would be sharing from the press release can be very technical and it may be not that easy to fully understand when you first read it due to the complexity and technicality of the information communications / mobile networks industry.

The key takeaways would be that these two components are essential to the development and growth of 5G networks in Singapore, when the journey to 5G is reached, consumers can enjoy the benefits of faster mobile network speed, your usage and consumption, would increase and power more different type of devices/technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, 4K videos, social media, in your personal life and also your work profession.

Personally, the journey to 5G in Singapore might be faster to arrive than we are expecting. Moving towards a digital, technology savvy and well connected economy and country, 5G networks and technology has the capability to help Singapore in its growth and we would need to look at how to leverage and ride on the 5G technology, in improving our workflow and communications.

Let me share with you more information and details from the press release information below:

Singtel and Ericsson are working together to pilot Massive MIMO and Cloud RAN on Singtel’s 4G LTE network. Both technologies are key components in the evolution to 5G that will enable Singtel to expand its mobile network capacity to offer faster speeds by the end of the year.

Video traffic represents more than half of mobile traffic today. It is set to rise further with increasing adoption of video applications such as Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and 360-degree video, which imposes high demand on network capacity. This is why networks need to evolve to gradually achieve ultra-high bandwidth, pervasive connectivity and low latency promised with 5G.

Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) is key to achieving Gigabit LTE speeds as it improves spectral efficiency to triple or quadruple the number of data paths of cellular base stations. This expands network capacity and improves user experience. Ericsson AIR 6468 radio, providing 64T64R Massive MIMO capabilities, will be tested and progressively deployed on Singtel’s 4G LTE network.

Both companies will also embark on a pilot of Cloud RAN which will provide Singtel with the flexibility to centralise, distribute, scale and virtualise radio access network functions to efficiently meet performance requirements today and on the road to 5G.

Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, Chief Executive Officer, Consumer Singapore, Singtel, said, “Data traffic is on the rise and will increase exponentially with 4K video, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality services on the horizon. We are investing ahead to ensure that our networks have the capacity and speeds that will offer our customers the best mobile data experience in Singapore.”

Arun Bansal, Head of Business Unit Network Products, Ericsson, said, “Our collaboration with Singtel provides a unique opportunity to be part of their 5G journey.”

Singtel offers Singapore’s widest mobile coverage and fastest mobile data speeds at 450Mbps. Singtel and Ericsson first signed a 5G MOU in January 2015 and were the first to showcase a 5G system in Southeast Asia in August 2016, achieving a downlink speed of 27.5 Gbps.

Some updates and announcements

Taking the pen and writing down the points that I wanted to write for this post, I took a back in time and reflected on my journey for the past 1 year. It was coincidental or even an omen that it took a year since I left my previous organisation in 2016. March 2016 was the start of a journey from the bottom of the well, getting myself back on track with the hurt, disappointments, anger and a big blow to my self-belief. The journey in 2016 doesn’t make it easier dealing with the loss of three people that left the world.

All these life lessons taught me and honed me in many different ways, over the course of this 1 year. Yes, it took me a bit longer than some of your “perceived + expected” expectations to reach this juncture today, writing out these updates and announcements article. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

In the past few months, the first quarter of 2017, I was very busy preparing and setting up my photography business, when you planned and prepared your things yet you faced even more things popping up here and there. More life lessons learned during the past few months, always be prepared for more of the unexpected even though you had did your planning. Thus, there was a slowdown and backlogged in writing and sharing my technology posts. They would be swinging back to action soon.

Therefore, what are my major updates and announcements?

First and foremost, I took the leap of faith and founded my photography business, Tan Geng Hui Photography. There were some changes, restructuring and realignment of my photography sites, written in an article here for your reading.

Meanwhile, I am still working with Wills & Wills, let me recap on what they do and the importance of will writing and estate planning.

Moreover, I am now added another work to my portfolio, working with ProTradersCode. They specialise in conducting classes on how to invest/trade FOREX and stocks and shares. I would be sharing more about them in an upcoming article soon.

The journey ahead for 2017 and 2018 are very tough and challenging, a time to adapt, adjust, innovate and change. I took the first step on my long journey ahead of me, let it be an amazing adventure of growth, expansion and learning.

Grab’s new commercial Carpool service – GrabShare

Grab, the leading ride-hailing platform in Southeast Asia recently announced GrabShare on 6th December 2016. GrabShare is Grab’s new commercial carpool service, whereby passengers can share a ride and fare.

I remembered visiting Grab’s booth at Echelon Asia Summit 2016 and learned about their Grab for Work. The Head of Grab Singapore, Mr Lim Kell Jay, also spoke at one of the platforms during Echelon Asia Summit 2016, his sharing and views left a good impression on me. Technology advancements have changed tremendously over the past few decades and in today’s climate, “Disrupt or Be Disrupted” on Grab’s business card sums it up perfectly.

During GrabShare official launch event on 6th December 2016, I had the opportunity to witness the launch of GrabShare and the chance to hear Kell Jay speak again, sharing about Grab and GrabShare. Kell Jay mentioned to the visitors present at the official launch event that caught my attention and left an impression on me, Grab looks after their drivers and in turn, the Grab drivers would look after the passengers that they fetch and ferry around. In my personal humble opinion and from a services industry provision perspective, this business philosophy is the way to go for growth and expansion (for Grab’s service/ride-hailing/transportation).

Let me share more information and details about GrabShare from the press release information below –

Grab, the leading ride-hailing platform in Southeast Asia, today announced GrabShare, the company’s first commercial carpool service that is beta-tested in Singapore. With GrabShare, passengers enjoy cheaper rides while drivers earn more from completing two passenger bookings in one trip. GrabShare is the company’s fourth transport service in Singapore and complements GrabTaxi (taxi-hailing), GrabCar (private hire car-hailing) and GrabHitch (non-commercial social carpooling).

To get passengers quickly to their destinations, GrabShare pairs just two passenger bookings with similar trip routes within a single trip. Passengers will only experience a maximum of two stops before reaching their destinations. For example, if Passenger A commences the ride and is paired with Passenger B, depending on the more efficient trip route, Passenger A may make a first stop to pick-up Passenger B and a second to drop-off Passenger B.

“Commuters in Singapore indicated that they would be open to carpooling if they didn’t have to make long detours with numerous passengers in one trip. Drivers had the same feedback and wanted the option of taking short breaks between trips. GrabShare is designed with drivers and passengers in mind to provide the best carpool experience in Singapore — passengers enjoy cheaper fares with minimal additional time spent on the road, and drivers earn more from shorter carpool trips,” said Lim Kell Jay, Head of Grab Singapore.

Benefits of GrabShare to passengers include:

1. Cheaper fares

GrabShare fares are priced up to 30 percent cheaper than GrabCar Economy fares. Fares are fixed and displayed upfront. With Grab’s dynamic pricing model that balances supply and demand, passengers enjoy cheaper rides during non-peak hours when more available drivers are on the road.

2. Ride with a friend at no additional cost

GrabShare users can bring another friend on the ride at no additional cost, as long as both share the same pick-up and drop-off locations.

3. Maximum two-stop guarantee

Passengers can expect no more than two stops before reaching their destinations. This ensures everyone reaches their locations fast for less. Drivers will wait up to three minutes for each passenger at pick-ups.

4. Instant booking

Passengers can book a GrabShare ride on-demand from anywhere, at any time and enjoy socialising with fellow commuters on the ride.

5. Ride with peace of mind

Grab’s Group Personal Accident Insurance covers all passengers in the event of an accident. The total personal accident benefits for the driver or passengers can be up to US$250,000 per vehicle, or up to an aggregate limit of US$2.5 million per accident.

Benefits of GrabShare to drivers include:

1. Higher earnings

Drivers can complete two passenger bookings at once to receive higher combined fares with every GrabShare trip.

2. Similar trip routes

Every GrabShare match is designed to minimise additional distance travelled, reducing fuel consumption and time spent on a GrabShare trip.

How GrabShare works

1. Passenger A selects GrabShare ride and is picked up by a GrabShare driver.

2. Passenger B selects GrabShare ride, and Passenger A and B are matched. The Grab app notifies both the driver and Passenger A and B of a successful match.

3. Diver makes a slight detour to pick up Passenger B. Both Passenger A and B can bring one other person to ride with them (for example, four seats in the car may be filled).

4. The order of pick-up and drop-off ensures that both Passenger A and B get to their destinations quickly.

Friday 9th December 2016 Special!
To celebrate the launch, passengers can ride with GrabShare for a flat fee of SGD5 on Friday, 9 December, regardless of the journey.

Download the Grab app today from the App Store and Google Play to experience GrabShare. For more information, please visit https://www.grab.com/sg/share/.

“When We Are Old” wins Singapore leg of Singtel Group’s “The 5-Min Video Challenge”

In August 2016, I shared an article earlier on my site that Singtel Group launched a competition to drive content innovation in all its markets that they operates in. The name of the competition organised by Singtel Group is “The 5-Min Video Challenge”.

For the Singapore leg of Singtel Group’s “The 5-Min Video Challenge”, a winner has emerged! The title of the video is “When We Are Old” directed by Mr Koh Chong Wu. The runner up is “Calling Home” directed by Mr Tang Kang Sheng. They will be competing with entries from other countries for the grand prize at the regional finals to be held in Singapore on 21st November.

Let me share more information on this news below –

Singtel has announced that “When We are Old”, directed by Mr Koh Chong Wu, has won the Singapore leg of Singtel Group’s inaugural video competition, “The 5-Min Video Challenge.” The runner-up spot went to Mr Tang Kang Sheng’s entry, “Calling Home”. Both videos will compete with 10 other entries from Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania and Thailand, for the grand prize at the Regional Finals to be held in Singapore on 21 November.

Supported by Singtel to nurture and provide talent with a platform to showcase their creativity, the Singapore leg of the Challenge attracted more than 55 submissions from film professionals, as well as students. The theme, “Connecting Lives”, was narrated in 5-minute videos that grappled with topics ranging from the light-hearted such as travel and youth romance, to more serious societal concerns such as aging.

A stellar cast of judges including Mr Eric Khoo, Mr K. Rajagopal and Mr Brian Gothong Tan considered criteria such as relevance to theme, storytelling, originality, cinematography and quality of production, in choosing the winning entries.

Mr Brian Gothong Tan said, “The films that we have selected reflect our human need to connect. We gravitated towards films that portrayed the complexity of communication in a simple, clear yet profound manner. We were moved and touched by their honest storytelling that expressed the human condition with all its ups and downs, and showed us how all our lives are inextricably linked.”

Inspired by a true story, “When We Are Old” offers a glimpse into the life of a son living with his dementia-suffering mother.

Mr Koh said, “I am very happy and excited about winning. Making films is my passion and I have made it my lifelong pursuit. To be able to help others share their stories and create films that touches the heart of others means a lot to me. Winning this competition will spur me to continue to make more films and reach out to more people.”

The runner-up, “Calling Home” depicts how a migrant worker’s call home connects two strangers at a bus stop.

“It is such an honour to have our short film chosen as the first runner up and we are absolutely psyched about the win! The film was made based on our own experiences on connecting with strangers. What came through to us most in this production was how both the actors had channelled their own personal experiences into their performances.” said Mr Tang.

Mr Koh will be awarded S$15,000 in prize money for winning the local challenge and runner-up, Mr Tang will receive S$10,000. Their videos, along with two other top local submissions can be viewed on Singtel TV, the official 5-Min Video Challenge website and Singtel’s YouTube Channel.

Mr Koh and Mr Tang will also join finalists from Singtel Group’s regional associates to vie for the Grand Winner spot and cash prize of US$30,000 at the Regional Finals later this month.

The 5-Min Video Challenge – Audience voting

Conceptualised to drive content innovation and engage audiences in all of Singtel’s markets, “The 5- Min Video Challenge” is a joint initiative by associates within the Group, comprising Singtel, Optus, AIS, Airtel, Globe and Telkomsel.

The Challenge garnered close to 600 entries from Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Tanzania and Thailand. The videos, submitted by a demographic of students, aspiring filmmakers and award-winning directors, featured various languages and a gamut of genres, ranging from comedy, romance to drama and slice of life.

Local judges were tasked to choose a winner and runner-up from the submissions. Twelve finalists – two from each of the six countries will be competing in the Regional Finals.

These finalists, as well as regional judges, Mr Eric Khoo (Singapore), Mr Monty Tiwa (Indonesia), Mr Simon Joyce (Australia), Mr Philbert Ortiz Dy (the Philippines), Mr Pratthana Leelapanang (Thailand), and Mr Hanscana (Tanzania) will convene at the Grand Hyatt Singapore on 21 November for the final judging session and awards event.

Besides the regional judges, audiences will also have a say in choosing the Grand Winner – public votes will count for 30 percent of overall scores at the finals. The public can view and then cast their votes for their favourite videos at www.the5minvideo.com/finalists. Voting is open until 18 November 2016, 2359hrs, SGT.
