I Have New (Running) Shoes!

Running, a sport that became close to my heart, soul and personal development over the past few years as I started to play less team sports and do individual sports. It was a sport that I always go for when I am down and running in the night lets my hair down, de-stress and kept me fit and not getting fat too fast over the past few years. Running to me is therapeutic and relaxing although the longer distance runs such as the 21km and 42km does make me ache. I used to write and share my stories on running over the past few years, somewhere inside my posts here, into a journal here, the ups and downs, the milestones and achievements.

Looking back in time around February 2010, I got myself into a freak accident and went through a lot of rehabilitation, rest and recovery. Running from that time onwards took a back seat totally for about a year. It took me quite a long period of time before I get myself out from the couch after resting/recovery from too long on the sidelines and started running again. There were times when I missed joining the runs in Singapore, however, whenever I looked at the number of runs in Singapore, I was glad that I didn’t go and sign up all of them. There were a bit too many runs in Singapore over the years, this is my personal humble opinion.

Due to the nature of my injuries, I am currently retired from running a full marathon 42.195km, I may or may not run a full marathon again. My roll of full marathon runs completed included 5 full marathons from 2006 to 2009, 3 of them were Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore from 2006 to 2008, 2 of them were Sundown Marathon from 2007 to 2008 and  the 2009 Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore that I did not complete. Definitely not the best of timings since I never trained enough and consistently, completion of the full marathon was always a memorable and big achievement for me, with all the sweat, muscle ache and pain, many times of mind over body, the full marathon run was just like how my business/work operates.

I was happy with completing 10km runs, a distance that is not too damaging to me since my injury days in 2010. Looking ahead, running is like goals and objectives in life, in work, in business. I am aiming to return and goes back to my next level of running distance, the half marathon, 21km distance. This will be another personal goal and personal achievement to attain since I had to “reset” myself since the injury. It’s falling down, slowly getting up and started running again, towards a new age of freedom, a New Hope, another new beginning.

My current running shoes were peeling away and turning into “crocodiles”, I had to search and replace my running shoes. After researching and consideration, I finally bought my new running shoes from the New Balance factory outlet, this bright and shining lime green M890GY3! It’s really lightweight and shining! I believe it will bring me back to my next level of running and completing the half marathon 21km distance.

Alright, now I need to start training and running consistently in a disciplined/planned training schedule.

Counting down to Singapore Marathon 2009

Tomorrow on the 6th December 2009, at 0530 hrs, I would be embarking on my Number 6 Full Marathon. A finisher in all past full marathons, psychologically and mentally, I have no issues or major worries with my marathon preparation, however, physical preparation wise, with my determination to complete my training schedule for my marathon, my illness, business/work commitments and discipline failed me to reach and complete my optimum training runs.

I will take full responsibility for my actions and will not lay blame on any of the points nor everything else, for the those mentioned above – that I wasn’t able to fulfill my training commitments. Heading into tomorrow Singapore Marathon 2009, I would adopt a strategy of maintaining my running speed and pace for my 10km and 15km runs, at least for the distance up to 30km and from 30km onwards to the finishing mark, I will push and motivate myself to Run My Own Race and Finish with a Bang !!!

With a new sponsor New Balance coming on board Singapore Marathon 2009 and for the next 2 years, their marketing and advertisements on the buses and signboards are pretty good, showcasing faces of runners and supporters.

However, their race pack is VERY DISAPPOINTING.

A drawstring bag – save cost ? save the environment ? Acts as a laundry bag for me instead.

Singlet – Still alright, no issues, quality not too bad.

Other stuff inside the drawstring bag – nothing much to talk about.

Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the race day itself, in less than 24 hours away. I hope my disappointments in my race pack will be changed with the race event, atmosphere and carnival itself and thoroughly enjoy myself tomorrow and bring myself to an improved level of marathon running and finishing.

For all Marathon runners going for Singapore Marathon 2009, whether this is your maiden marathon run or you are a seasoned or veteran marathon runner –

GOOD LUCK !! Run Your Own Race !!

Waking up at 5am, picking up friends, Alex, Shi Wei & Gabriel at 530am and reaching Changi Exhibition Centre at 615am, waiting for the 15km New Balance Real Run 2009 to kick start at 730am. Enjoyed the sunrise, stretched and warmed up slowly, waited for Viktor and Jerlyn to join us. Soon the 15km run started at 0725hrs and we all started running !! There was a big crowd turnout today, estimated to be around 14,000 to 15,000 runners, New Balance Real Run is not usual typical running event, it consists of 3 different terrains to conquer and it can be physically demanding

Trail – 4km

Sand – 0.6km

Taxiway / Road – 10.4km

Running across 3 different terrains over 15km serves as a good build up to my Singapore Marathon 2009 in about 1 month’s time, I would be entering 20km training phase next week, 1 x 20km on the weekend, 1 x 10km or 15km on the weekday. Getting back into the New Balance Real Run, although the crowds were quite big, it wasn’t that crowded with the wide spaces available. Overall, some parts of the terrain was more demanding especially the sand and the final 2km running back to the Finishing Point, the hot sun from the sky above and heat coming from the road really zap a lot of energy off me, even though I been through this route & situation before, I still find it very challenging for the final 2km !

This sunday morning was HOT, by the time I finished 4km of Trail, my singlet was “glued” to my body with my perspiration, drinking and hydrating was done at all water points. Finishing the run at 1 hr 40 min 22 s and I set my target for the New Balance Real Run at 1 hr 30 mins, it wasn’t too far off considering the route and terrain demands and the scorching HOT weather and last but not least, I enjoyed my New Balance Real Run, had fun and took a step further in my marathon training preparation !

Finishing the run, enjoying the air-conditioning inside the exhibition hall, queue for good bag and resting with friends and colleagues, taking group photos with finisher medal. Next run ….. Singapore Marathon 2009 !

A Tale of 2 Upcoming Runs (Nike & New Balance)

Running, a popular sports in Singapore, that had gained quite a fair bit of publicity and participation growth over the past few years. In the coming weeks and months, there would be some of the more popular community and competitive runs in the Singapore running calender.

Before my grand finale Singapore Marathon in December 2009, I would be taking on the Nike+ Human Race 10km on 24th October and New Balance Real Run on 8th November, as my prelude and training runs for the 42.195km Singapore Marathon. Training for my full marathon is a little bit of my training schedule due to business commitments and falling sick for a week, thus interrupting my training schedule by 1 week.

Back to the Nike+ Human Race 10k and New Balance Real Run 15km, I am looking forward to these 2 runs. Both runs have its unique features and challenges, Nike+ Human Race is more community based and attracts younger runners especially students that are still schooling, with its fun and hip concept. New Balance Real Run 15km is a terrain challenging run that gives runners a taste of road, sand and trail, over 3 different terrains and a hot morning Singapore sun.

For these 2 runs this year, the race pack for Nike+ Human Race had changed and it was lesser goodies than their 1st year, entry cost had lowered thus lesser goodies inside I supposed, a sign of budget cuts or constraints. The Nike+ Human Race T-shirt is quite nice though, like it a lot.

As for the New Balance Real Run, you had to wait for me to complete the run before I would be to show you, my readers, the finisher pack, with the medal, small messenger bag and running t-shirt. The race pack collection for the New Balance Real Run 2009 consists of a ziploc bag with the number tag, safety pins and timer chip.

Last but not least, the email to inform runners for the New Balance Real Run 2009 to collect their race packs was very late, the email reached me on 16th October 2009 0350 hrs for collection dates 16th October to 18th October. This was very unusual and hope this would not happen again in the future.
