Indonesian talent wins Singtel Group’s “The 5-Min Video Challenge”

The Singtel Group organised “The 5-Min Video Challenge”, celebrating filmmaking talent in Asia as well as a content push by the Singtel Group. The theme for this year 2017 is “Connecting Lives”. The 5-Min Video Challenge attracted quite a number of videos submissions from Australia, Gabon, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. There were a number of different genres from comedy, romance, drama and life stories from the videos submissions.

For each respective country, two finalists from each of the six countries were chosen by lcoal judges to compete in the regional finals. Thereafter, there was a regional judging panel that chose the Grand Winner and runner-up.

On 22nd November 2017, the finalists came down to Singapore for the regional fianls and the crowning of the Grand Winner of The 5-Min Video Challenge organised by Singtel Group. Watching the video clips of the finalists at the media event, followed by the media interview. I had a wonderful time watching some amazing short films/videos produced by talented filmmakers from the region, some were very touching, their cinematography style that I relate to quite closely.

The regional judges were impressed with the regional finalists for this year 2017 “The 5-Min Video Challenge”.

Mr Khoo, who returned as a judge for the second year, said, “We were wowed by the great improvement in the short videos this year. The winning works really spoke to us and we look forward to working with some these talented filmmakers.” He advised aspiring filmmakers to hone their craft by continuously filming and finding new ways to tell a story even with their smart phones.

“The 5-Min Video Challenge” is both a celebration of the filmmaking talent in Asia and a content push by the Group. Centred on the theme “Connecting Lives” this year, it attracted hundreds of video submissions from Australia, Gabon, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. The videos submitted spanned a range of genres from comedy, romance to drama and slice of life.

Listening to the words, views and thoughts of the regional judging panel headed by award-winning Singapore filmmaker Mr Eric Khoo and comprising Mr Aaron Lea (Australia), Mr Joko Anwar (Indonesia), Mr Serge Abessolo (Gabon), Mr Quark Henares (the Philippines) and Mr Thitipong Kerdtongtawee (Thailand). This was an eye-opener for me personally; I had a better understanding of producing videos/films/content from both sides of the story, from the filmmakers/producers/writers to the judges/clients/end consumers. I was involved a recent behind the scenes photo shoot for my friends short film/videos project, therefore, I began to appreciate filmmaking and cinematography in the short films industry, from a consumer perspective and content producer perspective.

After watching the videos submissions by the finalists and listening to the media press conference, the finalists and guests proceed to the ballroom for the awards announcement and prize presentation. Of all the finalists, I had some personal favourite videos/films submission, do visit The 5-Min Video Challenge YouTube account and check out the regional finalists 2017 playlist!

The two finalists from Singapore submitted these two videos “Sarah” and “The Red Packet”, I do like the works of our finalists from Singapore! “Labasan ng Feelings Sa Foodpark”, a video submission from the Philippines also caught my attention too!

Alright, have you watched all the videos/films submissions by all the Regional Finalists? This year’s 2017 The 5-Min Video Challenge were won by the Indonesians, the Grand Winner and runner up. Firstly, let’s view their videos submssions:

Grand Winner – Chick Chick

Chick Chick tells the story of a young girl who befriends a chicken. Her attempts to communicate with the chicken, inspires her to try and reconnect her fighting parents with a tin-can phone.

Runner Up – Sowan

The runner-up Sowan follows a man who travels to various places on his motorbike. He hears about recent agricultural issues and discovers the conflicts among farmers, middlemen and sellers.

With the announcement of the Grand Winner, runner up and finalists, we hope to see more of their works and videos on each of Singtel Group member’s mobile and video platforms, allowing them to reach a 670 million strong audience across Asia, Australia and Africa.

Singtel launched Apple iPhone X

The Apple iPhone X was a highly anticipated smartphone in the Singapore market when it was first announced by Apple in California. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus first arrived into the market, followed by the iPhone X. Although I am in the midst of upgrading from my iPhone 7 Plus, I am quite curious to see, feel and touch the iPhone X.

On the morning of 3rd November 2017, I attended Singtel’s launch of the eagerly anticipated Apple iPhone X at ComCentre, catching the official launch and the first Singtel customer to get the much coveted iPhone X from Singtel.

Mr Wang Wei Hong, 33, arrived at Singtel Shop Comcentre at 6am this morning, making history as the first Singtel customer to get the much coveted iPhone X. The bank service manager is a huge Apple fan – he has every iPhone model made and also queued up early to be third in line for the iPhone 8 Plus when it was launched two months ago in September.

Mr Wang purchased the 256GB iPhone X in Space Grey and is most excited about its “all screen” design and the “optical image stabilisation” feature on the smartphone’s cameras.  He added, “I’ve taken the day off and will spend time exploring all the features of my new iPhone X”.

There was high demand for the iPhone X among Singtel customers, with pre-order stocks snapped up in minutes. Singtel customers who pre-ordered successfully will be collecting their iPhone X at a special three-day iPhone X launch event at Singtel Shop Comcentre.

After the official Singtel iPhone X launch was over, I stayed around for a while more with fellow tech blogger friend Hisham, to check out the features of the iPhone X, trying it out, testing the video quality, comparing the size and features of the iPhone X with my iPhone 7 Plus. Thanks to Hisham for posing with the iPhone X and helping me with holding the iPhone X and my iPhone 7 Plus together for comparisons!

I am probably going to continue and stick it out with my current iPhone 7 Plus (still working good) for now, till my 2 year Singtel contract expires next year and I shall wait for the next iPhone model.

If somebody is going to give me an iPhone X as a Christmas (December) + birthday (January) gift for me, I will accept it with open arms!

Singtel launched Unlimited Data, Talktime & SMS Mobile Plans

Singtel mobile users alert! I have a great news to share with you! You now can have unlimited data, talk time and SMS mobile plans! For me, currently on Data X2 plan, this new plan is a very good consideration for Singtel mobile users!

With Singtel having the fastest mobile networks and with the most recent announcements on 2 of the latest smartphone brands available in the market, the Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8, this would be an ideal time to get this new unlimited data, talk time and SMS mobile plan by Singtel!

Although I am not too sure if there is a need for me to have unlimited data plan at this time, having this option to choose unlimited data plan is definitely worth a consideration! This would be ideal for professionals who are on the move a lot outside and need the huge mobile data for their work.

Singtel today upped the ante with the launch of Singapore’s first mobile plans with unlimited local data, talktime and SMS/MMS available on the country’s fastest network that provides peak mobile data speeds of 500Mbps (1) nationwide.

From today, Singtel Combo 3, 6 and 12 mobile plans will be upgraded with unlimited talk time and SMS. Customers who sign up for these plans can enjoy unlimited local data with DATA X INFINITY, an add-on available at just S$39.90/month.

Singtel to deploy Massive MIMO technology at special events

The journey to 5G by Singtel continues, it’s shaping up nicely and progressing towards reaching the 5G standards. Singtel recently announced that they would be deploying massive MIMO technology at special events in Singapore, starting with National Day Parade 2017, taking place very soon on 9th August 2017!

For those who regularly visited National Day Parades over the years, whether at the parade ground itself or in the nearby vicinity, we would encountered and experienced no mobile network coverage due to the huge number of people in the area. With the deployment of the massive MIMO technology, that would relieve the issues that mobile users faced previously. I am looking forward to Singapore reaching the 5G technology standards, it would be very helpful and useful for businesses and consumers.

Let me share with you more information on Singtel to deploy massive MIMO technology at special events from the press release information:

Singtel announced plans to deploy Massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology commercially on its LTE-Advanced mobile network, to enhance mobile data speed experience by up to 200% at special events for its customers. A precursor to 5G technology, Massive MIMO is an advanced solution used to boost network capacity in highly dense environments.

Singtel will team up with Ericsson, Huawei and ZTE to deploy Massive MIMO technology at the Marina Bay area. For a start, Singtel will roll out the network boost at the upcoming National Day celebrations, with other deployments planned for the Singapore F1 Night Race and the New Year countdown event.

Over 150,000 people are expected at the Marina Bay area to celebrate National Day. Singtel mobile customers gathered there will be able to enjoy a better data experience as they share their photos and videos of the exciting performances and fireworks on social media.

Mr Mark Chong, Group Chief Technology Officer, Singtel, said: “On the joyous occasion of our National Day celebrations, Singtel is pleased to be pairing our newly-acquired 2.5GHz spectrum with Massive MIMO technology to expand our network capacity and offer our customers an enhanced mobile experience at this and other special events. We look forward to rolling out new technologies and innovative solutions to support the anticipated growth in mobile data.”

Globally, large crowds gathered at events, such as concerts and festivals, use high volumes of data to share their experiences via real-time videos on social media. This extraordinary behaviour generates a dramatic spike in network traffic, presenting a challenge for operators to provide fast and consistent data speeds.

Singtel has identified Massive MIMO as one of the solutions to the problem. Singtel will use Massive MIMO base stations featuring a large array of 64 antennas that improve spectral efficiency and cell capacity using innovations in radio technologies. The innovative antenna system channels signals to users’ specific locations instead of broadcasting across a geographical area. This multiplies the number of data paths from the cellular base stations, thus increasing network capacity and improving user experience.

Singtel provides Singapore’s fastest nationwide mobile data speeds at 450Mbps and recently launched 800Mbps speeds in the high-traffic Orchard Road area. In addition to having the island’s widest outdoor 4G coverage as rated by IMDA1 for 10 consecutive quarters, Singtel is also ranked the fastest telco in Singapore by global metrics leader, Ookla.

Singtel launched an integrated multimedia campaign to inspire Singaporeans

National Day 2017 is just round the corner, it’s arriving soon, 9th August 2017. The celebrations are starting to get into full swing, building up towards National Day 2017, when we celebrate Singapore’s 52nd birthday.

In conjunction with National Day celebrations, Singtel launched an integrated multimedia campaign to inspire Singaporeans to continue and keep up the Singaporean spirit, the Majulah spirit to unite and propel Singaporeans together towards being bigger and better.

What is this integrated campaign all about? Let me share the news and information:

This is going to be a month long campaign, paying tribute to Singaporeans from all walks of life, who have, in their own ways, contributed to the making of the nation. It features Singaporeans from different backgrounds coming together as one nation to seize opportunities, overcome challenges and keep on striving.

“National Day is a celebration of our progress as one people every 9 August when Singaporeans fill up with national pride and patriotism,” says Ms Lian Pek, Vice President of Group Strategic Communications and Brand. “But often times, the spirit of National Day tends to fizzle out shortly after. We hope our campaign will serve as an awareness ribbon of sorts to gently remind ourselves to keep flying the Singapore flag even after the birthday party.”

Jointly developed with BBH, the Singtel campaign will roll out 12 print ads in the run up to 9 August, featuring portraits of Singaporeans and their aspirations on banners and posters at bus stops across the island and on social media. Well-known photographer and instagrammer Chia Aik Beng was enlisted to capture a representative spectrum of society and their different hopes for the country. A customized National Day frame (https://www.facebook.com/profilepicframes) will be made available on Facebook for users to download and partake in the celebratory greetings. Singtel will also release a video, dedicated to Singaporeans’ go-getting spirit.

Powering On Sports

The second part of this month-long campaign will feature Singapore’s athletes heading to the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur from August 19 to 30 in their quest for sporting glory for the nation.

“There’s nothing like having our athletes represent Singapore at regional or international sporting meets to bring Singaporeans together,” says Ms Pek. “We see the Games as a natural extension of our National Day campaign as ultimately, it’s a very tangible reminder that we all have to raise our game to keep Singapore ahead of the pack.”

Supporting Team Singapore at the upcoming SEA Games is part of Singtel’s ongoing partnership with the Singapore National Olympic Council to develop the local sporting scene. Under this recently renewed partnership that started as far back as 2012, Singtel will help fund the training of the nation’s athletes to promote and develop sports in Singapore.

The ‘Power On’ campaign will feature six partner athletes in content that aims to promote a sporting culture and inspire Singaporeans during major athletic events. They are: Joseph Schooling (Swimming), Loh Zhi (Water Polo), Mark Leong (Water Ski), Nur Alfian (Silat), Shanti Pereira (Track and Field) and Shayna Ng (Bowling).

Journey to 5G: Singtel launched near-gigabit speeds

The journey to 5G continues, it is getting there, getting closer. I have been covering on the topic of 5G networks and I have more information to share with my readers and fellow technology enthusiasts.

Singtel is launching in phases, near-gigabit speed on its LTE-Advanced network at selected high traffic outdoor locations across the island, starting with Orchard Road (outdoor areas of Shaw Centre, ION Orchard and Tang Plaza). If you are a Singtel mobile network user, time to test the near-gigabit speed when you are at this part of Orchard Road!

As Singapore moves ahead in her journey to 5G, how we work, live and consume mobile data is going to change. It is going to be interesting to see how 5G networks is going to help us in our everyday life and work. During my course of learning, researching and writing on 5G networks, I would share more information and updates along the way, on the Journey to 5G in Singapore!

Let me share some key information and details of Singtel’s journey to 5G – Near-gigabit speed LTE-Advanced network:

At 800Mbps, it is Southeast Asia’s fastest Gigabit-class LTE mobile data peak speed, delivering up to 60% faster download speeds than prevailing LTE services (at 450Mbps).

The near-gigabit transmission speeds are achieved by scaling pre-5G technology solutions, 4×4 Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (4×4 MIMO) and 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM), coupled with triple carrier aggregation of spectrum exclusive to Singtel.

Starting today, customers with Sony Xperia™ XZ Premium smartphones will be able to enjoy the 800Mbps peak speeds at the outdoor areas of Shaw Centre, ION Orchard and Tang Plaza on Orchard Road. Full deployment at Orchard Road, Raffles Place and Clarke Quay is slated for the end of August. More Cat 16 smartphones supporting 1Gbps speeds are scheduled to be launched later this year.

The 800Mbps service augments Singtel’s nationwide 450Mbps mobile data speeds. In addition to having Singapore’s widest outdoor 4G coverage as rated by IMDA[3] for 10 consecutive quarters, Singtel was also recently named the fastest telco in Singapore by global metrics leader, Ookla.

New LVL UP plan for youths by Singtel

Students, youths and NSFs take note! There is a new mobile plan that you can “level up” on your Singtel’s Youth Combo plans and data add-ons! Singtel recently launched its new LVL UP plan for youths and this is something that you can look at!

We live in a highly internet and social media connected society today, with smartphones and mobile data playing a key part in our life, communicating with family, relatives and friends, reading stories/news, finding information and watching entertainment/videos on our smartphones.

What are some of the key highlights of this new LVL UP plan? Let me share the information below:

Youths who sign up for a LVL UP Youth Combo 3 plan will automatically receive Combo 4 talk-time, data and SMS benefits and more. They will only have to pay S$62.90 to enjoy 5GB of local data, 400 talk-time minutes, unlimited SMS, free Youth and Campus calls, and unlimited use of Singtel WiFi. They can even take their optional data add-on to the next level and receive DataX3 for the price of DataX2, to get up to 11GB of data every month.

Singtel and AXA Insurance jointly launch smart car solution

A smart car device and a cloud-based smart car application in your smartphone using Singtel’s mobile network, this smart car solution is able to help car owners/drivers in Singapore, promoting better and safer driving habits. This smart car solution is jointly launched by Singtel and AXA Insurance, comprising of a Modus smart car device and cloud-based smart car application, analyses driving patterns through a vehicle’s OnBoard Diagnostic (OBD) port. This is another innovative solution launched by Singtel for their customers and a good example on how technology implementation can help improve our life and daily activities.

In Singapore, with the number of cars on the road and looking at how the drivers drive, this is a good move for drivers to adopt this smart car solution by Singtel and AXA Insurance, getting the drivers to think about themselves, for their families and make them driver better and safer on the roads in Singapore.

How does this Modus device/smart car solution works?

The Modus device will synchronise with the smart car application on customers’ smartphones over Singtel’s mobile network. The solution provides the driver with insights on areas such as braking, acceleration and speed, which can help improve driving techniques and behaviour and enhance road safety. With these insights, drivers can also adjust their driving patterns to lower fuel consumption and troubleshoot potential engine problems.

Features include:

  • Driver analyses on areas such as braking, acceleration and speed
  • Real-time location monitoring (to easily find your car)
  • Trip history
  • Engine health information (battery voltage and engine temperature)
  • Driving scores (based on driving analyses)

As part of this initiative, Singtel and AXA Insurance are offering a year of free AXA car insurance worth S$5,000 to the safest driver in Singapore. To qualify, customers must sign up for the solution, activate their smart car devices and drive at least 3,000 kilometres during the contest period. The winner will be determined by the Driving Score computed on the smart car app.

The smart car solution is available on a 24-month contract. To enjoy the service, customers need a Singtel postpaid mobile plan and a new Singtel MobileShare subscription. The smart car solution comes with a Modus smart car device and Modus smart car cloud subscription for 24 months.
