Singtel welcomes F1 to Singapore as official network partner of GPSS 2022

Singtel welcomes F1 to Singapore as the official network partner of Grand Prix Season Singapore 2022 (GPSS 2022), powering the experiences and festivities along Orchard Road and Clarke Quay with 5G. With Singtel’s nationwide 5G coverage, F1 race spectators, visitors to the various MICE events coinciding with Singapore GP, locals and tourists alike will be able to experience the high-speed connectivity and ultra-low latency of Singtel’s 5G network from anywhere on the island.

Singapore is the first country to be fully covered by standalone 5G network, Singtel is taking the 5G experience to the next level at GPSS 2022 and F1. In a world’s first, Singtel will be applying the most advanced form of network slicing technology  to support its digital app marketplace, CAST. With Sports Plus on Singtel CAST, race fans will be able to catch the entire high-velocity night race from wherever they are, even around the high traffic areas of the circuit, where over 250,000 spectators are expected, due to the dedicated capacity being allocated to the service.

Immersive experiences beyond the track

In addition to having the fastest and most extensive 5G network in Singapore, delivering 5G speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, and spanning more than 1,300 outdoor and 400 in-building locations, as well as underground, Singtel is bringing more 5G experiences beyond the Marina Bay area.

  • The Singtel 5G Experience booth, open daily from 11am to 10pm in front of Ngee Ann City from 23 September to 2 October, will include an immersive 3D augmented reality race simulator that enables users to feel like their favourite F1 drivers, showcasing the high-speed, ultra-low latency advantages of 5G. The first 100 visitors to the booth who share a photo of their experience on their social platforms with the hashtag #Singtel5GEverywhere stand to walk away with exclusive 5G merchandise.
  • The Singtel 5G network will also be powering the live broadcasts from the Mediacorp roadshow, for the first time, on Orchard Road via 5G SIM cards instead of local area network cables or WiFi, ensuring smooth, ultra-low latency transmission of their content. Visitors can catch their favourite Mediacorp DJs and artistes such as Justin Ang, Vernetta Lopez, Dennis Chew, Qi Yuwu and many more, hosting games and giving away premiums on site or via their online radio app.
  • Over at *SCAPE, Singtel 5G will be powering the Teleios Next-Gen Racing Simulators which feature actual training scenarios used by F1 drivers for users to try their hand at.

  • In the heartlands, race fans can also enjoy an ultra-responsive and lag-free gaming experience that emulates the hyper-realistic conditions F1 drivers face via the #SingaporeGP Roving Truck. Equipped with Singtel 5G, the first-of-its-kind truck in Singapore is equipped with high-definition digital screens on both sides and has been broadcasting some F1 races from this season since July. The truck will be at One Kampong Glam on 27 and 28 September, from 4pm to 10pm.

5G connectivity for tourists

To support the high number of tourists keen to experience the GPSS at its best, Singtel is launching the Singtel Prepaid 5G $50 and $30 hi!Tourist SIM card, which comes with up to 120GB of 5G data, unlimited local talk time and SMS, 90 minutes of international minutes, and up to 5GB of data roam to popular destinations.

Tourists can also look forward to SIM cards with popular Singapore landmarks and race car images printed on them as well as an exclusive race car thumb drive that has been developed to commemorate the F1 season.

They have recently surpassed 95% nationwide 5G coverage and effectively making Singapore the first country in the world to be fully covered by standalone 5G. Enabling seamless mobile experiences for GOMO customers

Live-streaming, gaming, and working on the go, these are the activities that Millennial and Generation Z consumers are doing a lot more, therefore there is a greater appetite for faster and seamless mobile experiences. In order to support the demand for more data and faster connectivity, Singtel is offering the GOMO 5G Plan which comes with 60GB of 5G data, 1,000 minutes of talk time and 1,000 local sms at S$30. Singtel achieved over 95% standalone 5G nationwide coverage

Singtel announced that it has achieved over 95% standalone 5G nationwide coverage. They have achieved their target, more than three years ahead of the regulatory target of end-2025. With this achievement, this effectively makes Singapore the first country in the world to be fully covered by standalone 5G.

Singtel’s standalone 5G network now covers more than 1,300 outdoor locations and over 400 in-building, as well as underground. All these help to create enormous opportunities for the development of ground-breaking applications and immersive experiences for both enterprises and consumers. In June 2020, Singtel was officially awarded the 3.5GHz and the millimetre wave spectrum as part of the 5G license issued by IMDA. In November 2021, an additional 2.1GHz spectrum was awarded, both which supported the achievement of Singtel’s critical milestone in 2022.

“We’re extremely excited about this important milestone for both Singtel and Singapore as nationwide standalone 5G coverage is a major leap in technology that will spur unprecedented digitalisation. Despite disruptions from COVID and the knock-on impact on manpower and resources, our planners and engineers managed to accelerate our 5G deployment, working through the pandemic to lay the groundwork and build a whole new infrastructure for a secure and resilient 5G network. Singtel has achieved many firsts in Singapore’s 5G journey, starting in July 2018 when they launched the first pilot network, followed by May 2021 when they launched the first standalone network, to providing 5G in the North East Mass Rapid Transit Line (NEL) that runs entirely underground in May 2022.

First fully 5G National Day celebrations (NDP 2022)

National Day 2022 is just round the corner, taking place on 9th August 2022. As Singapore returns to the floating platform for National Day Parade 2022 (NDP 2022) celebration after a two-year hiatus due to COVID, Singaporeans will get to experience their first 5G National Day celebration.

To mark Singtel’s 5G nationwide rollout, this year’s NDP 2022 will be fully streamed on 5G – showcasing Singtel’s enhanced mobile broadband capability to ultra-high definition content. For spectators on-site, they will enjoy high speed connectivity, enabling seamless streaming or uploading of high-resolution content from NDP 2022.

Mr Mark Chong, Singtel’s Group Chief Technology Officer said, “Deploying 5G at an event of this scale will seriously test the power and reliability of our network, especially its ability to distribute real-time ultra-high-definition content from multiple 5G-enabled devices that are concurrently streaming over global online mediums. This is new for us, but we will prepare well and rise to the challenge. With our experience supporting the Parade over the years and our 5G trials in Sentosa, we’ve picked up important lessons on managing the complex technology to cater to the increasingly sophisticated demands of spectators that catch the show. With faster upload speeds, lower latency and more secure technology, people will get the full superior viewing experience of 5G. We’re excited to bring 5G to everyone at one of the biggest and most anticipated events in the Singapore calendar.”

Accelerating 5G enterprise adoption

As for the 5G enterprise/business sector, Singtel has been making steady progress in commercialising 5G. Singtel launched the 5G@Sentosa testbed in 2021 in partnership with multiple government agencies, including the Government Technology Agency and the Sentosa Development Corporation, supporting the development of a whole range of public sector 5G use cases for the built environment, transport and tourism industries. There are around 15 live trials that are slated to be running by the end of this year, and at least 30 by the first half of 2023.

Our high speed, low latency 5G network with edge cloud and network slicing enables functions like real-time computing, data storage, data analytics and AI services at the edge – bringing to life more mission-critical enterprise applications than before, from automated quality inspection in factories, smart city planning, connected self-driving vehicles to supercharged IoT. Just like Singapore, which is known for its high standards, we’re deepening our expertise and establishing a strong presence in the markets we operate in. Working with our partners across Asia Pacific, we’re extending more 5G solutions and use cases to enterprises and other telecommunication service providers in the region,” Mr Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Group Enterprise and Regional Data Centre Business, Singtel.

Earlier this year 2022, Singtel launched Paragon – the industry’s first all-in-one orchestration platform that consolidates all the necessary resources required across 5G and edge computing into one touchpoint, thus significantly lowering the barriers to 5G adoption and integration for enterprises, from cost to complexity.

Recent partnerships include AETOS, Micron and Hyundai who have deployed 5G solutions to improve operational efficiencies, drive innovation and enhance problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.

5G for everyone

For the consumer market, Singtel has successfully demonstrated 5G’s benefits and impact through use cases such as Singapore’s first 5G-powered remote racing in Sentosa and The People’s Gallery, an exhibition developed in collaboration with National Gallery that leverages augmented reality to transform more than 25 neighbourhood void decks into art galleries.

To celebrate this national 5G milestone, Singtel is giving customers a range of NDP exclusives including unlimited 5G data on 9th August, as well as free access to the full range of programmes on Singtel CAST and Singtel TV from 6th to 9th August. Seniors will also get to purchase the latest Xiaomi Redmi 10 5G phone for just $57 during that period.

Formula 1 and Tata Communications – A global digital ecosystem enabler powering the fast-growing digital economy, recently announced a multi-year strategic collaboration, with Tata Communications returning to Formula 1 (F1) sport as the Official Broadcast Connectivity Provider of F1, to deliver and enhance a world-class, technologically advanced experience for their global fanbase.

Tata Communications will empower F1 with global end-to-end managed network services for video contribution, this would transform F1 motorsports experience. For this F1 motorsports experience to take place, Tata Communications will facilitate the transfer for more than 100 video feeds and over 250 audio channels to be transmitted between the Grand Prix venue and F1’s Media & Technology Centre in UK every race weekend in under 200 milliseconds. This would enable F1 to broadcast to over 500 million fans in 180+ territories globally.

Tata Communications has industry recognised and built-for-media connectivity solutions, this will enable F1 to transform its broadcast content production worldwide while continuing to support motorsports drive for agility and sustainability. F1 introduced remote broadcast operations in 2020, Tata Communications has allowed reduction in F1’s traveling freight by 34%.

Singtel CNY – The Hunt For The Lucky Tiger

Singtel launched its annual Chinese New Year (CNY) short film, titled “The Hunt For The Lucky Tiger”, celebrating the festive season’s spirit of bonding with family and community. This short film is the third instalment in Singtel’s festive film series featuring two rival families that have endeared themselves to Singaporeans after their silly and funny yet meaningful altercations in the previous two films – “His Grandfather’s Road” and “My Grandmother’s House.”

The Hunt For The Lucky Tiger

The Hunt For The Lucky Tiger is set against the backdrop of the pandemic, in this year’s film, the Ang and Huang families opt to go for for a staycation during the CNY break instead of traveling overseas. Kismet leads them to choose the same hotel on the beautiful and now 5G-powered island of Sentosa, sparking fresh contention and comedic rivalry between the families when they run into each other upon arrival. They also sign up for the same treasure hunt, the main action in the film, as part of their staycation itinerary.

During the hunt, the families pit their wits and skills against each other in search of the elusive Lucky Tiger brought to life via augmented reality. They go head-to-head in an immersive, remote-controlled car race powered by the high speeds of Singtel’s 5G network. The race is a hotly contested affair with both nominated drivers showing deft skill in controlling their cars enabled only by lag-free next-generation connectivity.

The story takes a dramatic turn when Ah Boy, the youngest son from the Ang family, goes missing midway through the search for the tiger avatar in the lush forest trails on the island. The families rally to comfort a panicky Wendy (Ah Boy’s mother played by Pam Oei), setting aside petty squabbles to find him. Mr Ang even goes as far as to call for a search and rescue drone from Garuda Robotics to locate his son. Seamlessly over 5G, he captures the drone footage and movements via live video streaming on his mobile device.

The film serves as a showcase for 5G use cases, such as Garuda Robotics’ autonomous drone systems which are currently undergoing trials at the 5G@Sentosa testbed, a public-private sector collaboration led by the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), and Singtel. By enabling agencies to trial use cases that improve operational effectiveness and deliver citizen-centric services, the testbed aims to catalyse large-scale public sector adoption of 5G and develop Singapore’s 5G eco-system ahead of nationwide 5G rollout in 2025. Singtel plays a key role in supporting the initiative with its purpose-built network and edge cloud infrastructure allowing for 5G application rollout on a mass scale. Singtel has achieved 75% coverage and its 5G network has been named Singapore’s fastest by Ookla® the second time running (1).

Through creative use of local humour and relatable scenarios around the festive season, “The Hunt For The Lucky Tiger” showcases Singtel’s branded story-telling strategy and brand values of family, community, diversity and inclusivity. The new use cases cover various sectors from entertainment to mobility, bringing to life the benefits of 5G by redefining live, work and play experiences with blazing fast speeds and near-instantaneous response times. Meanwhile, Singtel is also continuing to expand its 5G network which now covers over two-thirds of Singapore, adding sites in densely populated areas such Choa Chu Kang, Punggol, Sembawang and Tampines. In addition to that, Singtel has also expanded its 5G indoor coverage to major shopping malls island-wide such as Funan, West Mall, Tampines Mall, Northpoint City and Waterway Point.

Powering Up Singapore With 5G

Singtel presented the speed, power, capabilities and connectivity of 5G at Powering Up Singapore With 5G event. In a 5G first for Singapore during the event, Guest of Honour, Minister for Communications and Information Mrs Josephine Teo and IMDA’s Chief Executive Mr Lew Chuen Hong were ‘teleported’ into the venue via Singtel’s 5G network, in which their high-resolution likeness were beamed from a separate location. The network’s ultra-low latency meant that Minister Teo and Mr Lew could ‘interact’ seamlessly with Mr Yuen on stage.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Communications and Information Mrs Josephine Teo highlighted the role of 5G, “Mobile networks and data exchanges are key building blocks for the digital infrastructure. 5G, which promises to be ultra-fast and supports near-zero latency, can change the way we live and work in profound ways, and become essential for the digital developments of the future. Building a digital future is certainly about the hardware, software, systems and standards. It is equally about the people and skills. For that, the Government will continue to invest in reskilling and upskilling our people so that they can achieve not just digital literacy but digital mastery. This way, everyone can benefit from the infrastructure.”

The arrival of 5G has proved timely during this period of remote working, working from home and safe distancing as digital adoption has accelerated at a much faster pace. More people are going digital, using digital channels to go about with their daily lives, resulting in a corresponding increase in demand for fast and reliable connectivity. This is reflected in a recent Singtel survey, in which majority of consumers indicated that 5G-enabled services such as augmented reality books and virtual reality entertainment events appeal to them.

Heralding the Future of Live, Work and Play

Singtel is delivering new entertainment experiences powered by its 5G SA network. These include:

  • 5G-powered Remote Racing: Partnering with Formula Square to deliver an immersive, lag-free experience racing remote-controlled cars powered by 5G at Southside, Sentosa;
  • 4K Live Streaming: Working with S.E.A. Aquarium to bring Singapore’s first underwater 5G livestream of the S.E.A. Aquarium to UNBOXED, Singtel’s unmanned pop-up retail store, where visitors can immerse themselves in the aquatic wonders of the aquarium, viewing manta rays, sharks and shoals of fishes in vivid 4K resolution;
  • Enhancing the Arts and Culture Experience: Collaborating with the National Gallery Singapore and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay to deliver cultural and art experiences over 5G, from the Singtel Special Exhibition Gallery and the Singtel Waterfront Theatre when it opens officially next year. This will enable more people with opportunities to get up close and personal with local artists and performers amid prevailing safe distancing measures;
  • Co-creating the future of hybrid work: Teaming up with Samsung and Zoom to introduce a Productivity Data Pass plan offering data-free usage of Zoom, enabling customers to connect to family and colleagues seamlessly and lag-free. This, coupled with Samsung devices such as DeX, will enable customers to set up virtual workstations easily.

Boosting Industry Digitalisation

Singtel also demonstrated at the event how 5G is empowering industries and businesses with greater productivity and operational efficiency. Key to this is multi-access edge computing (MEC), an infrastructure that maximises 5G’s low latency, high bandwidth benefits and enables functions like real-time computing, data storage, data analytics and AI services at the edge. MEC supports massive and faster connectivity of devices, bringing to life more mission critical enterprise applications than before, such as real-time asset tracking and automated quality inspection in factories and smart city planning.

Singtel has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ericsson and global industry partners to collaborate on the development and deployment of advanced 5G enterprise solutions in Singapore. This is part of Singtel’s strategy to nurture a growing and vibrant local 5G ecosystem. The MOU will allow companies to leverage Ericsson’s technology expertise and Singtel’s 5G network, test facilities and capabilities to innovate solutions and scale them up for global deployment.

Singtel customers first to enjoy 5G roaming

Singtel recently launched 5G roaming, giving Singtel customers the first to enjoy powerful 5G roaming experience at both at home and abroad. To kick off the launch of Singtel 5G roaming, Singtel, as a long-time supporter of Team Singapore, is sponsoring 5G connectivity for its partner athletes to stay connected with their family and loved ones as they represent the nation in the Tokyo Olympics. The launch enhances Singtel’s suite of 5G offerings for consumers, making it the first telco in Singapore to achieve this milestone within a year of receiving its 5G licence.

Singtel 5G customers on 5G NOW or 5G XO Plus plans will be the first in Singapore to enjoy 5G roaming (1). Currently, 5G roaming has been enabled in 13 destinations through 18 global partner telcos, including Australia, China, Finland, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and Thailand. More destinations will be added in the coming months.

Singtel is a long-running sponsor of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), providing support for home-grown athletes competing in major games since the 2012 London Olympics. For the Tokyo Olympics, Singtel will supply the whole contingent with roaming services, including 5G roaming and ReadyRoam subscriptions for its Team Singapore partner athletes and SNOC officials. Singtel accelerated its 5G rollout during the year, deploying over a thousand 5G sites across Singapore and was the only telco to rollout indoor 5G with coverage in popular malls such as VivoCity and Ngee Ann City. In February, Singtel launched its XO Plus plans with 5G access, allowing customers to experience immersive entertainment powered by 5G speeds of up to 1.2Gbps. In April, Singtel started issuing 5G SA compatible SIM cards to customers and launched its 5G SA network the following month. Singtel first to launch 5G Standalone network in Singapore

Singtel recently launched its 5G Standalone (SA) network, offering customers early access to the most advanced 5G connectivity globally. As compared to the 4G network, 5G SA network delivers twice the responsiveness, 30% faster uploads, with strengthened authentication and encryption capability. With much greater bandwidth and near-instant responses, 5G SA will enable revolutionary applications like self-driving cars, real-time immersive entertainment, and massive Internet of Things (IoT) connections.

Singtel accelerated 5G push with 5G Standalone deployment

Singtel accelerated 5G push with 5G Standalone (SA) deployment in Singapore with the deployment of hundreds of 5G SA sites across the country in areas such as Orchard Road, Central Business District, Harbourfront and Sentosa. Singtel has also progressively expanded their 5G in-building coverage that began in VivoCity to more indoor locations, starting with Ngee Ann City and selected Singtel Shops across Singapore. The 5G SA sites run on 3.5GHz spectrum, enabling Singtel to deliver ultra-fast speeds and swifter response times.

In preparation for 5G SA commercial launch, Singtel will begin issuing 5G SA compatible SIM cards (1) to customers starting from 27th April 2021. The new Singtel 5G SIM cards are capable of supporting faster speeds, lower latency rates and offering enhanced authentication and encryption. This will ensure Singtel customers have a seamless and secure 5G experience.

Singtel has upgraded its 5G radio access network with advanced radio technologies to connect to a cloud-native standalone 5G core network, enabling it to run 5G independently. This would allow Singtel to deliver 5G SA’s ultra-fast speeds and connections. The network will soon offer network slicing capabilities which allow for the dynamic distribution and optimisation of network resources to support a wide range of applications. Singtel will intensify its 5G SA deployment across the island in the coming months as handset manufacturers progressively roll out 5G SA software updates for existing 5G handsets and launch more 5G SA compatible models in Singapore later this year.

From 27th April 2021, new and re-contracting customers who opt for a 5G Now add-on or 5G XO Plus plans (2) will receive Singtel’s new 5G SIM card for free (U.P. S$37.45) until 31 May 2021. Existing customers with eligible plans (3) can switch out their current SIM cards at no extra charge at all Singtel Shops, Singtel Exclusive Retailers, 24/7 unmanned store Singtel UNBOXED (now located at Plaza Singapura) and Singtel UNBOXED Lite multi-media kiosks at Tong Building on Orchard Road.

Since last September, Singtel has been operating Singapore’s fastest 5G NSA network under a market trial, offering 5G speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps. This has seen Singtel extend its 5G coverage indoors and boost its island-wide coverage.
