Singtel CNY – Don’t Worry, Be Hoppy!

Chinese New Year (CNY) 2023 is just round the corner, we would be ushering and welcoming the Year of the Rabbit on Sunday 22nd January 2023. Singtel is celebrating CNY with everyone with the release of CNY festive film titled, “Don’t Worry, Be Hoppy!”, pointing towards the incoming Year of the Rabbit and how quick-footed technology helps bond people and enriches their modern digital/social media lifestyles – from seamless content streaming to e-gaming. This year’s festive CNY film also highlights Singtel’s commitment to provide prompt, quality service to customers which serves as a key differentiator of its services.

Before we go into this year’s Singtel CNY festive film, do you remember “His Grandfather’s Road“, “My Grandmother’s House” and “The Hunt for the Lucky Tiger“? They are the previous CNY festive short films produced by Singtel and they have chalked up to over 20 million views to date. The message of strengthening bonds with families and friends over CNY has resonated deeply with viewers who found them heartwarming and meaningful.

“Don’t Worry, Be Hoppy!” is the 4th instalment in Singtel’s CNY series featuring the well-loved rival families, the Angs and the Huangs. This 5-minute film retains and sustains the same sitcom-style comedy that we are familiar with from the previous CNY festive short films, starting with both families discovering that they have become neighbours.

As one of the earlier residents, the Angs visit the Huangs, and it takes no time for the mothers to start getting competitive over the size of their television sets, before getting excited over the launch of a new K-Drama series streaming that day. The story takes a turn when the internet connection appears to go down and televisions in both homes go blank. Frantic, the families call their respective service providers for help.

You can now watch “Don’t Worry, Be Hoppy!” short film on Singtel TV and various social media channels!

According to a recent report by IMDA, on how telecom service providers handle consumer feedback per 10,000 subscribers for the months of August and September 2022, Singtel has just 0.25 and 0.14 complaints about broadband services and a very low 0.01 and 0.03 complaints for mobile services in August and September respectively.

Singtel was also the quickest to respond to calls on its hotline and live chats among the service providers – with customers waiting an average of only 0.77 minutes in August and 0.33 minutes in September. About 86% and 75% of the complaints received through these channels were resolved within the first 5 days from receipt.

Anna Yip, Chief Executive Officer, Consumer Singapore, Singtel, said, “Customer service lies at the heart of the Singtel customer experience and this film underscores our commitment to providing personalised, empathetic and accessible service to our customers. While the pandemic saw many consumers turn to digital channels for convenience, we know that our customers still value in-person onsite services when necessary and speedy resolutions to their issues and we are constantly striving to deliver to those expectations. We intend to keep investing in our people and processes to deliver a service quality that sets us apart from the competition.”

Lian Pek, Vice President for Group Strategic Communications and Brand, Singtel, said, “In today’s hyper connected world, technology plays a critical role in connecting people and supporting their digital-first lifestyles. But as played out in our latest festive film, sometimes things don’t go as planned and that’s where a committed service provider makes all the difference. Customers either rave about great service or complain about bad. So customer service has literally become marketing. Our brand promise is built on the delivery of quality customer service and this is certainly one of Singtel’s biggest competitive advantages.”

Singtel’s festive film is accompanied by a real world look at how Singtel staff have supported customers over the years. Among those featured in a separate short video is Mr Tan Lam Liong, who has been with Singtel for 45 years and heads a team that tests all home devices, such as routers and set-top boxes before they are installed in customers’ homes. He also helps with any follow-up issues they may face.

He says, “I love troubleshooting and solving problems. I get a sense of satisfaction when I’m able to resolve a customer’s concerns and they are happy.”

This behind-the-scenes look at Singtel’s customer care team will be released on Singtel’s LinkedIn page.

Singtel achieved over 95% standalone 5G nationwide coverage

Singtel announced that it has achieved over 95% standalone 5G nationwide coverage. They have achieved their target, more than three years ahead of the regulatory target of end-2025. With this achievement, this effectively makes Singapore the first country in the world to be fully covered by standalone 5G.

Singtel’s standalone 5G network now covers more than 1,300 outdoor locations and over 400 in-building, as well as underground. All these help to create enormous opportunities for the development of ground-breaking applications and immersive experiences for both enterprises and consumers. In June 2020, Singtel was officially awarded the 3.5GHz and the millimetre wave spectrum as part of the 5G license issued by IMDA. In November 2021, an additional 2.1GHz spectrum was awarded, both which supported the achievement of Singtel’s critical milestone in 2022.

“We’re extremely excited about this important milestone for both Singtel and Singapore as nationwide standalone 5G coverage is a major leap in technology that will spur unprecedented digitalisation. Despite disruptions from COVID and the knock-on impact on manpower and resources, our planners and engineers managed to accelerate our 5G deployment, working through the pandemic to lay the groundwork and build a whole new infrastructure for a secure and resilient 5G network. This means that Singapore can now exploit the full capabilities and best applications that 5G can offer, paving the way for innovation and new growth that will propel our country forward,” said Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, Singtel’s Group Chief Executive Officer.

He added, “As a homegrown Singaporean company, we feel honoured to have provided the critical infrastructure and essential services that have sustained the nation’s progress through the years and are pleased to launch this next-generation technology to commemorate Singapore turning 57. With a world-class 5G network in place, we look forward to keep doing our part in enabling Singapore’s next phase of growth as a global smart city.”

Singtel has achieved many firsts in Singapore’s 5G journey, starting in July 2018 when they launched the first pilot network, followed by May 2021 when they launched the first standalone network, to providing 5G in the North East Mass Rapid Transit Line (NEL) that runs entirely underground in May 2022.

First fully 5G National Day celebrations (NDP 2022)

National Day 2022 is just round the corner, taking place on 9th August 2022. As Singapore returns to the floating platform for National Day Parade 2022 (NDP 2022) celebration after a two-year hiatus due to COVID, Singaporeans will get to experience their first 5G National Day celebration.

To mark Singtel’s 5G nationwide rollout, this year’s NDP 2022 will be fully streamed on 5G – showcasing Singtel’s enhanced mobile broadband capability to ultra-high definition content. For spectators on-site, they will enjoy high speed connectivity, enabling seamless streaming or uploading of high-resolution content from NDP 2022.

Mr Mark Chong, Singtel’s Group Chief Technology Officer said, “Deploying 5G at an event of this scale will seriously test the power and reliability of our network, especially its ability to distribute real-time ultra-high-definition content from multiple 5G-enabled devices that are concurrently streaming over global online mediums. This is new for us, but we will prepare well and rise to the challenge. With our experience supporting the Parade over the years and our 5G trials in Sentosa, we’ve picked up important lessons on managing the complex technology to cater to the increasingly sophisticated demands of spectators that catch the show. With faster upload speeds, lower latency and more secure technology, people will get the full superior viewing experience of 5G. We’re excited to bring 5G to everyone at one of the biggest and most anticipated events in the Singapore calendar.”

Accelerating 5G enterprise adoption

As for the 5G enterprise/business sector, Singtel has been making steady progress in commercialising 5G. Singtel launched the 5G@Sentosa testbed in 2021 in partnership with multiple government agencies, including the Government Technology Agency and the Sentosa Development Corporation, supporting the development of a whole range of public sector 5G use cases for the built environment, transport and tourism industries. There are around 15 live trials that are slated to be running by the end of this year, and at least 30 by the first half of 2023.

“Now that our nationwide 5G coverage is in place, we expect commercial adoption to accelerate. Our high speed, low latency 5G network with edge cloud and network slicing enables functions like real-time computing, data storage, data analytics and AI services at the edge – bringing to life more mission-critical enterprise applications than before, from automated quality inspection in factories, smart city planning, connected self-driving vehicles to supercharged IoT. Just like Singapore, which is known for its high standards, we’re deepening our expertise and establishing a strong presence in the markets we operate in. Working with our partners across Asia Pacific, we’re extending more 5G solutions and use cases to enterprises and other telecommunication service providers in the region,” Mr Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Group Enterprise and Regional Data Centre Business, Singtel.

Earlier this year 2022, Singtel launched Paragon – the industry’s first all-in-one orchestration platform that consolidates all the necessary resources required across 5G and edge computing into one touchpoint, thus significantly lowering the barriers to 5G adoption and integration for enterprises, from cost to complexity.

Recent partnerships include AETOS, Micron and Hyundai who have deployed 5G solutions to improve operational efficiencies, drive innovation and enhance problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.

5G for everyone

For the consumer market, Singtel has successfully demonstrated 5G’s benefits and impact through use cases such as Singapore’s first 5G-powered remote racing in Sentosa and The People’s Gallery, an exhibition developed in collaboration with National Gallery that leverages augmented reality to transform more than 25 neighbourhood void decks into art galleries.

To celebrate this national 5G milestone, Singtel is giving customers a range of NDP exclusives including unlimited 5G data on 9th August, as well as free access to the full range of programmes on Singtel CAST and Singtel TV from 6th to 9th August. Seniors will also get to purchase the latest Xiaomi Redmi 10 5G phone for just $57 during that period.

“5G is for everyone and this National Day, starting with the National Day celebrations at the floating platform, we’re giving consumers a chance to experience its benefits. We’ll be using 5G to enrich our customers’ digital experiences as well as foster greater digital inclusion among the underserved. In the near term, we will unveil exciting new offerings that will enable more immersive, transformative digital experiences for all,” said Ms Anna Yip, Chief Executive Office, Consumer Singapore, Singtel.

In this current crisis, Singapore has also show its spirit of tenacity and perseverance. “The way Singaporeans have responded to this crisis is something we can all be proud of,” says Chua Sock Koong, Singtel’s Group CEO. “Our coming together as a community, our discipline as a nation, our fortitude and quiet determination to get through this and get on with life has become even more pronounced as National Day approaches. We may be celebrating in a more muted way this year without the usual fanfare, but our national pride and core values are still the same, the Singapore spirit is stronger than ever, and we want to celebrate that.”

A 2-minute photo montage beginning with landscapes of Singapore when the new normal kicked in, transiting from one empty public space to another, from playgrounds to hawker centres to void decks, along with the prospect of having to forgo much-loved annual events such as Singapore GP and National Day Parade.

“It’s been a difficult time for everyone, and the film captures this dislocation and sense of displacement, ” says Lian Pek, Vice President of Group Strategic Communications and Brand at Singtel. “But what starts off as a reflection on the things we are having to give up this year becomes an invitation to see the good that has come out of the crisis. Despite the restrictions on movement, disruptions to daily life, and cancelled events, the closing photos in the film show that Singaporeans have gained even more important things in return.”

Featuring photographs by photographers Chia Aik Beng, Nicky Loh and Tay Kay Chin as well as from members of the public. Conceptualised in-house and produced in collaboration with Akanga Film Asia and narrated by veteran actor Lim Kay Tong, the video will air on Singtel TV and hosted on various social media channels from 29 July 2020.

Singtel Celebrates Christmas with The Gift

The Christmas season is back in the month of December 2019. As we prepare to have the festive Christmas celebrations with our family and loved ones, Singtel celebrates Christmas with “The Gift“, they recently released a short film for this coming festive season, encouraging Singaporeans to spend quality time strengthening bonds and connections with family and loved ones. This film centres on a teenager who is very self-absorbed in the modern digital life, that disrupts the family’s annual Christmas tradition.

After watching “The Gift” by Singtel, some parts of the film resonated with me. There are times whereby even adults, not just teenagers, are spending more time on their smartphones instead of spending quality time with family, loved ones and friends. I hope that after watching this film, we would be able to spend more quality time with our family, loved ones and friends during this festive season and beyond.

The film took its cue from studies that show people of all ages are spending more time on their mobile phones than with family. According to a global study, Smartphone Addiction Facts and Phone Usage Statistics (The Definitive Guide 2019) by Bankmycell, smartphone users spend on average 2 hours 51 minutes a day on their smartphones, and less than 45 minutes a day on quality time with their families. Closer to home, most parents in Singapore do not limit their children to only the call and text functions on their mobile devices. A study by The Asian Parents Forum, commissioned by Singtel, found that more than half surveyed (51 per cent) are prepared to give their child a mobile line with mobile data.

Now, let’s watch “The Gift” presented by Singtel below:

“In our hi-tech world of shiny gadgets and devices, parents often feel compelled to indulge their children, even if their demands are excessive. We thought Christmas was the perfect time to reframe the spirit of giving in our increasingly digital society, that we really ought to be prioritising family time and connections in the deeper sense of the word,” says Lian Pek, Singtel’s Vice President for Group Strategic Communications and Brand.

“The Gift” is a part of Singtel’s on-going branded content campaign, which is served through a story-telling approach that allows the Group to articulate its brand values of family, community, diversity and inclusivity through a series of festive films. Focusing on the core themes of family and community, Singtel’s films have been well-received and anticipated. Last year, “Grace’s White Christmas” chalked up more than 11 million views on Facebook and YouTube. During this year’s Chinese New Year, “From Ma, With Love” garnered more than 19 million views.

“Our films are not solicitations to transact with us, but rather, to appreciate our values which would hopefully spark some desire to interact with our brand for the long haul. Today’s customers don’t just want to transact or buy from companies that meet their requirements profitably. They want to support and engage with companies that have heart,” added Lian Pek.

Conceptualised and produced in collaboration with Akanga Film Asia, the film will air on Singtel TV and various social media channels from 29 November to 31 December, and in cinemas from 12 to 25 December.
