Updates, Reflection and Thinking Ahead

This personal website/blog of mine hit a bit of a mind block recently, since the two articles published on 1st and 2nd October 2017. I had a few technology news and business articles to share for the past week, it slowed down for 1+ week, it will come back again soon!

I was reflecting upon, thinking ahead and adding to what I wrote in my 1st October 2017 article, titled “Start of Q4 2017, Final Sprint“. During the past 1+ week, it’s a bit of a consolidation, realignments, readjustments and also changes for the final quarter of 2017. All this things going on inside my brain and mind, contributed to this additional article today, a key reason why there wasn’t much news/articles published on my website/blog here during the past 1+ week.

Upgrading / Learning new skills and knowledge

Learning is life-long and never-ending, that’s my philosophy for both personal and professional aspects of it. I am looking to improve on my skills and knowledge segment, for improving my current skills set and knowledge, as well as learning new skills and knowledge.

  • Drone flying – Planning to add this skill, for my travel photography in the future.
  • Travel and Tourism Public Relations – I wanted to add this knowledge, theory and skill, not just to complement my travel photography projects/assignments, I am thinking and strategising new business ideas.
  • Workshops/Courses – Finding courses and utilising Skills Future Credit to improve myself, first course is Lightroom organised by Canon Imaging Academy.
  • Digital Marketing and Social Media Marketing – I recently attended #MDCDigitalMarketingDay at Management Development & Consultancy (MDC) by MDIS. For somebody who had been hands-on inside this segment for the past 10 years, I still have knowledge and skills to learn, keep a lookout for my upcoming article!

Thinking and Strategising Ahead

I need to brainstorm a business plan / model for travel and tourism public relations + photography + social media/digital marketing coverage.

Still very tough economic times and difficult + slow market

I have a few real life stories of business owners facing huge challenges in this very tough economic times, it’s still a difficult and slow market. I shared their pain, their difficulties and challenges, I might write more about this if my time allows.

When the economy and market returns to better levels and stabilises in the near future, we are no longer looking at big GDP growth numbers, we are probably looking at slow and small GDP growth, maybe 1-3% per year (that’s my personal humble view).

I will be back writing and publishing articles soon! Thank you for reading, following and supporting!

Canon announced new PIXMA printers

Canon recently launched 4 new PIXMA printers to their line up, 3 of them photo all-in-one and 1 office all-in-one. Looking at their technical specifications and form size, they are ideal for home/small office usage. Not only do the new printers look stylish, they have innovative features such as the Message in Print app that allows personalised messages to be sent across to the recipients.

The new Canon PIXMA printers use a new 6-ink system and this would greatly enhance the final photograph prints that are produced by them. The 4 new Canon PIXMA printers are PIXMA TS9170, TS8170, TS5170 and TR8570. With new innovative features, it makes easier for us to print and also share our favourite moments on photography prints, as well as on internet/social through the app.

Let me share more information and details on the new Canon PIXMA printers PIXMA TS9170, TS8170, TS5170 and TR8570 from the press release below:

“Canon’s new line of PIXMA printers complements life’s best moments through its ability to preserve and share memories on-the-go, with double the dynamism”, said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. Designed in a compact form to blend seamlessly into home offices or even parties, the stylish printers are superb for daily printing needs with the new Photo Blue ink in its six-colour ink system that guarantees vibrant and stunning prints.”

Changing The Way Memories are Captured in Print

Imagine a heartwarming birthday greeting that carries voices and sounds from an actual celebration, or a photo postcard of a concert that emits the very tunes being played at the performance. The new Message in Print app[1] makes all these possible. Allowing for personalised messages with animations or links to web videos to be embedded in any photo[2], the meaningful surprise can be delivered simply through viewing the photo via the Message in Print app.

Canon PIXMA TS9170

True Colour Fidelity with Photo Blue for Beautiful Photos

Canon’s new 6-ink system delivers breathtaking colour reproduction with an expanded colour gamut. With the new Photo Blue ink in the 6-ink systems for the PIXMA TS9170 and TS8170, photos graininess are minimised to reveal finer details. With ink cartridges available in standard and XL capacities, small businesses can enjoy lower costs of print using XL cartridge on the PIXMA TR8570 Office All-In-One printer.

Canon PIXMA TS8170

Seamless, Low Energy Connectivity[3]

With wireless connectivity, users can print and scan photos and documents directly from a mobile device, to deliver the convenience of printing on-the-go.

With Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, users can always stay connected to PIXMA printers via the Canon Print Inkjet/SELPHY app. Besides enjoying the convenience of printing anytime, anywhere, they can enjoy easy wireless printer setup, and receive status alerts such as low-ink notifications or when there is no paper in the tray, simply by being within Bluetooth discoverable range of the printer.

Canon PIMXA TS5170

User-Intuitive Functions Packed into a Sleek Form

Equipped with a large 5” touch-screen display mounted on a tilt panel, users can enjoy a variety of creative filters to achieve special effects like monochrome and sepia in their prints, when printing from memory cards on the PIXMA TS9170.

Similarly, the PIXMA TS8170 and TR8570 feature an adjustable tilt panel that houses the 4.3” touch-screen LCD, making it perfect for consumers who want a versatile printer without needing to compromise on speed and productivity.

As a space-saving all-rounder, the PIXMA TS5170 features a 2.5” LCD on an adjustable tilt panel, which makes it easy to operate and view menu options.

Canon PIXMA TR8570

Maximising Work Productivity

With the ability to load paper in two directions (rear tray and cassette tray), users can switch easily between two different paper types, such as plain paper and glossy photo paper. Those that do need to print a large number of documents can even fill both trays with A4 plain paper for a combined paper capacity of up to 200 sheets.[1]

The automatic duplex printing[2] function enables both time and cost savings through eliminating the need to manually reverse a previously printed stack. Additionally, the PIXMA TR8570 also features a time-saving Automatic Document Feeder that can load up to 20-sheets of documents for scanning or copying.

The Document Removal Reminder function is yet another useful feature for ensuring document security. When a document is left on the scanner glass after a scan or copy, a notification on the LCD panel and an audio alert prompts the user to remove their original document left on the scanner platen. The ID Card Copying function allows double-sided ID cards to be scanned onto a single printout, while retaining the original card size.

Pricing and Availability

The PIXMA TS9170, TS8170, TS5170 and TR8570 will be available from 25 September 2017 at the following recommended retail price.

Some updates and announcements

Taking the pen and writing down the points that I wanted to write for this post, I took a back in time and reflected on my journey for the past 1 year. It was coincidental or even an omen that it took a year since I left my previous organisation in 2016. March 2016 was the start of a journey from the bottom of the well, getting myself back on track with the hurt, disappointments, anger and a big blow to my self-belief. The journey in 2016 doesn’t make it easier dealing with the loss of three people that left the world.

All these life lessons taught me and honed me in many different ways, over the course of this 1 year. Yes, it took me a bit longer than some of your “perceived + expected” expectations to reach this juncture today, writing out these updates and announcements article. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

In the past few months, the first quarter of 2017, I was very busy preparing and setting up my photography business, when you planned and prepared your things yet you faced even more things popping up here and there. More life lessons learned during the past few months, always be prepared for more of the unexpected even though you had did your planning. Thus, there was a slowdown and backlogged in writing and sharing my technology posts. They would be swinging back to action soon.

Therefore, what are my major updates and announcements?

First and foremost, I took the leap of faith and founded my photography business, Tan Geng Hui Photography. There were some changes, restructuring and realignment of my photography sites, written in an article here for your reading.

Meanwhile, I am still working with Wills & Wills, let me recap on what they do and the importance of will writing and estate planning.

Moreover, I am now added another work to my portfolio, working with ProTradersCode. They specialise in conducting classes on how to invest/trade FOREX and stocks and shares. I would be sharing more about them in an upcoming article soon.

The journey ahead for 2017 and 2018 are very tough and challenging, a time to adapt, adjust, innovate and change. I took the first step on my long journey ahead of me, let it be an amazing adventure of growth, expansion and learning.

Canon launched first HD laser projector LX-MU800Z

Canon launched their first HD laser projector, the LX-MU800Z. This new projector would interest institutions, organisations and businesses that requires projectors to be part of their equipment setup.

Let me share with you more information of the Canon LX-MU800Z from the press release information below –

Canon announced the launch of the LX-MU800Z, the company’s first single-chip DLP projector with a Laser Phosphor Light Source that delivers a maximum brightness of 8,000 lumens, for up to 20,000 hours. The projector possesses native WUXGA, with a display resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 and dynamic contrast ratio of up to 10,500:1. The LX-MU800Z’s combination of a long-life laser light source, sealed filter-free system, seven interchangeable lens options, and a wide array of advanced features makes it ideal for a range of applications where excellent image quality and low maintenance are essential.

“The introduction of Canon’s first laser projector strengthens our interchangeable lens series to meet the demands of a diverse market. The LX MU800Z laser DLP projector is able to sustain extended periods of continuous projection with its long-lasting laser source and no-filter system. Coupled with its advanced adjustment and rotation features, users can project onto a wide range of screen surfaces and also obtain a 360-degree orientation on the vertical axis, making it the ideal projector for digital signage, auditoriums and art exhibitions.” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

Flexible installation and ease of use

With the ability to rotate 360 degrees at all angles on the vertical axis, the versatile LX-MU800Z is also capable of projecting in portrait applications[1]. With seven interchangeable lens options for the LX-MU800Z, the lens can be quickly installed and removed allowing users to easily switch around the options.

For enhanced installations, the LX-MU800Z also offers motorised lens shift that enables users to adjust the vertical and horizontal positioning of the projected image, and motorised zoom and focus, using the included remote. The projector’s lens memory function can also store up to eight different custom lens positions, which includes lens shift, zoom and focal length for added convenience. With the range of advanced geometric and professional imaging adjustments, the projector can be used to accommodate custom installations.

High image quality at low maintenance cost

The LX-MU800Z features an expanded colour gamut that covers RGB, enabling beautiful colour expression. Precise brightness settings can also be easily achieved according to specific requirements. In addition, there is no need for filter replacement with the projector’s sealed system. Coupled with its long lifetime of 20,000 hours, total cost of ownership for users is also greatly reduced.

Operating on a laser light source reduces the need for the projector to power up / shutdown, as the need to warm up or cool down the lamp is eliminated. This enables the LX-MU800Z to support continuous projection.

Versatile connectivity and enhanced network management

The versatile LX-MU800Z projector is extremely adaptable for multiple built-in terminals including 3G-SDI, HDMI, DVI-D, and a built-in HDBaseT™ receiver[2]. This allows uncompressed HD video, audio, and control signals to be transmitted over a single LAN cable with a maximum distance up to 100 meters.

The LX-MU800Z is compatible with Crestron, AMX, and Extron devices enabling control and the monitoring of multiple projectors on a network. It also supports PJLink™, ideal for observing lamp hours, usage and more.

The LX-MU800Z is now available at all Canon authorised dealers.

Reflection: Overseas media trip, Networking, Building Win-Win

A week ago, on the 18th May 2016, I embarked on a morning flight to Shanghai. This was start of a very amazing week, adding on to another achievement, a new milestone for me, I climbed one more step up, slowly lifting myself more and away from the rock bottom pit that I reached during the first quarter of 2016.

I was in Shanghai for Canon Expo 2016 Shanghai, my maiden overseas media trip! The Canon Expo 2016 Shanghai was a huge eye opener for me, during this trip, I learned a lot more about Canon, its various business groups and their future plans ahead. I would share more about Canon Expo 2016 Shanghai and a few Canon products that caught my attention in the upcoming posts on my photoblog. Besides learning and understanding more about Canon’s products, I met and networked with different people from Canon and media industry professionals from the Southeast Asia/South Asia region.

It was a great honour for me to be invited for this overseas media trip to Canon Expo 2016 Shanghai, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart to my friends who made this trip possible, for this golden and wonderful opportunity to attend Canon Expo!

Upon returning from Shanghai, I attended a networking event, on coffee and nuts, organised by Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS), met and made new friends from other Australian universities, caught up with old friends that I knew from my involvement in helping out at AAS in their events and activities. There was a period when I kind of slowed down/stopped in helping out AAS events and activities. During the coffee and nuts networking event, there was a good feeling again with this group of new and old friends from the AAS community.

My alma mater, The University of Queensland Association of Singapore (UQAAS) has a “Friends of UQ”, welcoming friends from other alumni associations to our events. When I recently joined a small group Macquarie University alumni gathering, I also became a Friend of Macquarie University! A nice and friendly bunch of friends, I knew some of my Macquarie University friends from AAS events and activities a few years back.

Slowly and surely, things are gradually falling into place. Although my jigsaw puzzle map still has quite a long way to go, the map is reaching there bit by bit, part by part. It may not mean an exponential revenue increase at all, however, the intangible benefits are appearing as signs, omens, friendships, encouragements, projects, partnerships.

This is the Win-Win that I always advocate and strive for, I would like to grow this further, help each other, to grow and expand our business, networks and friendships together. These are the people that I want/you want to work together with, not those people who do not believe in you and/or look down on you.

Things are not rosy, things are not easy. The economic situations in Singapore and around the world are still a question mark. In lieu of the economic climate and situation, this would be a great opportunity to grow from something small to decent size businesses.

For this kind of my normal routine post, it also happens to be my 800th personal blog post, a mini milestone post that coincides nicely and perfectly with this article.

Many Thoughts: Helping and Blessing Friends, Publicity, Branding, Gratitude, Humility

For the past two months, May and June 2015, these two months had seen some key and significant milestones in my life till date. The months of May and June 2015 were filled with publicity, public relations, fame, branding, marketing and awareness, followed by personal reflection, gratitude and humility. During these two months, I was able to help my friends, and it’s indeed a blessing to be able to help your friends, in whatever kind of situations they are in.

With half time for year 2015 coming soon, the year 2015 had been a very interesting 6 months, some pretty challenging moments/situations, sometimes very emotionally drained from work and people, there were times I did not know whom I can turn to and talk about, due to some very sensitive and private matters. On the other hand, there were also some key pinnacles that I reached and conquered. Reaching the top of the mountain, I looked back and reflected on the journey climbing up towards the peak. The journey was full of ups and downs, the view at the top is gorgeous and priceless.

Appearing in The Straits Times newspaper, a feature article of me, on my life, on my documentation of Marina Bay and my photography journey. No words can describe my pride, feelings, thoughts and emotions upon the release of the newspaper article. The huge support, well wishes, encouragement and sharing of my newspaper article feature were a huge blessing for me, I really appreciate the support and well wishes. This journey had been simply amazing and mesmerising!

We were also part of Promising SME 500 2015 this year as a Business Luminary, I was tasked to front as the spokesperson for my company, featuring in the Straits Times on 24th June 2015. The company’s history, write up and profile would be featured in the upcoming Promising SME  500 2015 book, coming soon in September 2015.

Many of us set goals and objectives at the start of the year, for their profession/work or personal life. To be honest, I confessed that I set goals and objectives for profession/work and personal life, and I failed many times over many years. On 3rd January 2015, I set out my goals and objectives for my photography (from a personal and professional perspective) with my photography resolutions for Year 2015. For the year 2015, I achieved and completed #4 – Produce my own photography books with the birth of my first personal photography book over a period of 6 months – My 1st Photo Book – Hokkaido Black and White Landscapes! The most humbling moments were my friends support and encouragement, it’s very heartwarming, very touching and I am very blessed.

With the blessings in life from my family, relatives and friends, it motivates and encourages me to continue striving and moving forward, climbing to greater heights and achieving higher pinnacles in life and working profession. These are the hidden powerful positive Force that keeps you going, learning and improving, in our fast and furious, relentless unforgiving capitalist society today.

Blessing by friends and having the capabilities and abilities to bless friends, they are both priceless. When we are able to bless and help friends, we MUST NOT and SHOULD NOT expect something in return. Our human nature, our greed, sometimes override our thoughts and systems, when we help people and expect something in return. I am a human being, I erred too and I am guilty of this too.

This started off as my personal photography projects, with the purpose of continuously improving my photography, helping to write and share about fellow friends who are entrepreneurs who are operating in various industries and businesses. One of them was Keith Crackling Roast, you can read more about the story here when they opened their second branch! When I saw my photographs that I took for Keith Crackling Roast, proudly printed and displayed at their second branch, it was a proud moment, for me and my photography journey. As a photographer, when you see your photography works printed and displayed, it’s definitely a proud and happy moment. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to see it up like this and I am very happy that photography works was able to create an impact.

There was someone that I helped out recently and it’s a blessing to help someone. For that someone, the beautiful rainbow welcomes you with their own beautiful blessings! Your journey has been very tough and now you are back on track!

Many beautiful things happened in the past two months of May and June 2015, over the past 6 months of 2015, the ups and downs of life and work. This is something like a reflection time for me, counting my blessings, staying humble and down to earth, to keep learning and improving, to continue striving towards my professional and personal goals and objectives.

Branding, Marketing, PR and Publicity

These four words have been an integral part of my work and social media engagements. I didn’t learn it as a specialisation in university, just as a subject that was part of my business degree curriculum. When I started working in the financial services industry 10 years ago, the nature of the industry taught me many real life work experiences relating to branding, marketing, public relations and publicity.

They were extended into my social media exploration adventure, from a social media consumer in 2006 to a social media influencer today. The branding, marketing, public relations, publicity and a bit of fame doesn’t fall from the sky. They were built through lots and lots of hard work, sweat, tears with emotions going high and low at different cross roads in time.

My Hokkaido Photographers Invitation Program in November 2014 was probably my maiden start into a higher level of branding, marketing, public relations and publicity. I was very grateful and full of gratitude for everybody that had supported me in this journey.

Fast forward into the May 2015, having a management and leadership role in my family business. I began to apply my various experiences in branding, marketing, public relations and publicity to my organisation. This efforts took a while and it began to see some fruits of labour from them. As I began to enter the third quarter of 2015, there are a number of events/things (3 to 4 of them) happening in the month of May and June, that puts me, my work, photography and social media sharing into a bigger limelight.

I would not know how I would feel when the 3 to 4 events/things come in, the excitement, anxiety and euphoria. Nevertheless, I must always remind myself to remain humble, down to earth, continue to learn and improve. I must not let fame get into my head.

Had I finally make it? Maybe Not Yet, I still have a lot more to learn, improve, grow and lead. Yes, I have punched through this level and can hold my head up high, to reach a top and see that my journeys ahead are going to be even higher and bigger summits, for me to carry on forward and conquer them.

Will you walk with me?
